Sixth-ranked Psyhiko (9-9) made lots of trouble for first ranked Panionios (17-1) in Athens on Saturday. Panionios managed to secure only two-point victory 77-75. However their fans expected much easier game. The best player for the winners was Bosnian-British center Fahro Alihodzic (208-89, college: UAB) who scored 19 points and 8 rebounds. The former international forward Nikos Barlos (203-79) chipped in 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Nikolaos Papanikolaou (209-85) who recorded 19 points and 6 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Psyhiko's coach Nikos Remendelas rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Panionios have a solid four-game winning streak. Newly promoted Panionios maintains first position with 17-1 record. Psyhiko at the other side keeps the sixth place with nine games lost. They share the position with 3 other teams. Panionios' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Athens to the arena Pagrati.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Arkadia, where higher ranked AE Larissas (9-9) was outleveled in a road game by twelfth ranked Arkadikos (7-11) 86-59. It was a good game for center Savvas Tsougarakis (207-86) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 26 points and 13 rebounds. Giannis Prodromou contributed with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Guard Theodoros Tsiloulis (190-93) replied with 13 points and 4 assists for AE Larissas. Arkadikos moved-up to tenth place, which they share with Amyntas Dafnis and Doxa Pefkon. AE Larissas lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team dropped to the sixth position with nine games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. Arkadikos will play against Doxa Pefkon (#12) on the road in the next round. AE Larissas' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Larissas GS Larissas.

Faros will meet at home Amyntas Dafnis (#11) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Kavala will play against Psyhiko and hope to secure a win.

Rest of the games of round 18 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
bottom-ranked Pagrati was defeated by Ethnikos in Piraeus 100-82. Doukas smashed Irakleio at home 90-63. Iraklis won against GS Larissas on the opponent's court 82-74. Holargos managed to outperform Doxa Pefkon in a home game 101-96. Aiolos Astakou managed to beat Amyntas Dafnis on the road 70-64.

There was no surprise in Piraeus where 16th ranked Pagrati (2-16) was defeated by eighth ranked Ethnikos (9-9) 100-82 on Saturday. Ethnikos looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. Swingman Nikos Kokkalis (198-85) scored 34 points (!!!) and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and center Kostas Macheras (205-85) chipped in 21 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. Ethnikos' coach Vangelis Vlahos used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was naturalized American swingman Nicholas Paulos (201-91, college: NC-Greensboro) with 25 points and 8 rebounds and point guard Sokratis Psaropoulos (191-92) scored 9 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Ethnikos moved-up to sixth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Pagrati lost fifth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with 16 games lost. Ethnikos will meet Irakleio (#14) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. No shocking result in a game in Athens where second ranked Doukas (15-2) smashed 14th ranked Irakleio (4-13) 90-63 on Saturday. Doukas made 20-of-25 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Guard Alexis Kiritsis (198-82) scored 21 points and 6 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and the former international guard Panagiotis Kafkis (197-80) chipped in 12 points during the contest. The best for the losing side was forward Dimitris Lolas (203-86) with 8 points and 6 rebounds and Serbian center Damir Latovic (204-80) scored 10 points and 6 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Amyntas Dafnis - Aiolos Astakou 64-70

Not a big story in a game in Athens where 10th ranked Amyntas Dafnis (7-11) was defeated by fifth ranked Aiolos Astakou (11-7) 70-64 on Saturday. Aiolos Astakou made 16-of-21 free shots (76.2 percent) during the game. Aiolos Astakou had a 35-22 advantage in offensive rebounds. The former international power forward Tasos Charismidis (203-81) had a double-double by scoring 11 points and 16 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and forward Vassilis Kitsoulis (204-83) chipped in 15 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. Four Aiolos Astakou players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was guard Ioannis Angelopoulos (194-91) with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists and point guard Leonidas Zoupas (182-82) scored 13 points and 7 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Newly promoted Aiolos Astakou maintains fifth position with 11-7 record. Amyntas Dafnis at the other side, also newcomer in the league, keeps the tenth place with 11 games lost. They share the position with Arkadikos and Doxa Pefkon. Aiolos Astakou will meet at home Holargos (#6) in the next round. Amyntas Dafnis will play against Faros (#4) in Keratsiniou and hope to secure a win.

GS Lavrio (A1) strengthened their roster with addition of 24-year old American forward D.J. Johnson (206-113kg-93). Johnson just graduated from Kansas State University (NCAA). He has played there for the last five years. In 34 games he recorded 11.3ppg, 5.7rpg and 1.5bpg last season. Johnson helped them to make it to the semifinals. Great season indeed as he was voted to All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. As mentioned above he is just out of the college and it will be his first season as a pro.    [read more]
