GasTerra Flames beat WCAA Giants to win Dutch
title -
May 26, 2010
Matt Bauscher (188-G-85, agency:
540 Sports, college:
Boise St.) turned the 2010 Dutch playoffs Finals into his own
personal showcase, and it was quite a show. The open minded, charismatic
young combo guard, with his refuse-to-lose attitude, lead the GasTerra
Flames to their third championship in Flames history, in a 79-74 victory
against the WCAA Giants that wrapped up the series in five games. 'We
did it as a team,' said Bauscher.
The Flames obliterated the Giants, who were trying to become the first
team to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the finals. The Flames missed their
first crack at closing out the series in Game 4, but didn't miss on
their second swing, taking the win and the championship at their gym.
With the outcome assured, Flames fans sang into the night as if they
were already on the 'Grote Markt' in the city. They serenaded the newest
champs, and taunted
Marco van den Berg and his Flames, who drowned in a blue-and-white
wave for 40 minutes.
Matt Haryasz
(210-C-84, college:
Stanford) dropped to the parquet and kissed the court, then found
his buddy
Matt Bauscher for a long embrace and they shared a group hug with
their coach.
GasTerra F. - Giants
79-74
GasTerra Flames outplayed WCAA Giants in Game Five of the Playoff Finals
(4-1) and won the Eredivisie title after five years. Last time the team
from Groningen did it in 2004.
Robby Bostain
(194-G/F-84, college:
Furman) shined for the hosts in yesterday's meeting with 17 points.
Jason Dourisseau
(196-G-83, college:
Nebraska) (5 rebs) and
Matt Bauscher (188-G-85, agency:
540 Sports, college:
Boise St.) secured a nice help adding 14 points each.
Matt Haryasz
(210-C-84, college:
Stanford) scored 11 points and grabbed 5 boards. In the loosing
squad,
Arvin Slagter (190-G-85) collected 17 points and 5 assists.
Jesse Kimbrough (183-G-82, college:
Jacksonville) (7 rebs) and
Tyrone Sally (201-F-82, agency:
540 Sports, college:
W.Virginia) (5 rebs) netted 15 points apiece. GasTerra Flames won
the Finals series with 4-1. As a reminder, the Eredivisie champion last
season was Amsterdam.
Second quarter was the crucial last night. Before that, WCAA Giants
earned 16-17 lead in the first period. The hosts took control on their
rivals very soon and stopped them to just 8 points for rest of the first
half. On the other side, they drained 18 for nice 34-25 after 20 minutes
of play. Both teams were pretty good offensively in the second half. The
Giants won Q3 with 20-22, but still the hosts had plus seven.
Robby Bostain and his teammates scored 25 points in the last quarter
and WCAA Giants had 27 on the other side. That was not enough for them
and the team from Groningen crowed this season with the National Title.
They also were regular season champions with impressive 33-3 record.
ZZ Leiden Downs ABC Amsterdam, 63-88, To Win
First Dutch Cup Title - Mar 28, 2010
ZZ Leiden capped a magical
season with a 63-88 victory over ABC Amsterdam at the Topsportcentrum in Almere on Sunday to bring home their first
Dutch Cup on the hardwood.
For 40 lopsided minutes, ZZ Leiden were too big, too long and too quick
for ABC Amsterdam. ABC Amsterdam had all the history behind it, and a
pretty good team, to boot. Amsterdam just didn't have enough. ZZ Leiden
took the lead from the beginning of the first quarter (18-32) and never
gave it up. ZZ Leiden maintained its advantage for the remainder of the
half, taking a 31-48 advantage into the locker room. ZZ Leiden opened up
the third quarter with a three in the first minute, which would prove to
put the game out of reach. Leiden won by taking it right to ABC
Amsterdam early, looking to Lemelle, Gibson and McGhee, making the extra
pass in the key and finishing with 18 assists on 17 field goals. ZZ
Leiden held the Amsterdam to 28.2 percent shooting from the field, and
33.3 percent from three-point range. Delirious ZZ Leiden fans, their
voices raw from screaming, snapped photos of the wild celebration with
digital cameras and cellphones.
