Portugal and Netherlands open Group D with 2 overtimes. The Portuguese team grabbed 85:79 win in Day 1 of the U18 European Championship in Division B.
It was the most interesting game of the first day. At first Portugal started with 20-17 and then Pedro Bastos (184-PG-94) scored for 33:30 at the halftime. Portugal led in the whole third period and had 51:48, while Guimaraes increased to 53:48 early in the fourth. Mike Schilder (185-PG-94, agency: Court Side) meanwhile tied the game at the end of the fourth period for 68:68. The teams scored 7 points each in the first extra time, but then Portugal dominated the last five minutes for the victory.
Pedro Bastos stepped up with 21 points to lead all the winners and Joao Grosso (196-F-94) nailed 17. Diogo Ventura (189-PG-94) poured in 15, while Isaias Insaly (197-F/C-95) added 10. Mike Schilder answered with 22 points in the losing effort and Shane Hammink (198-F-94) delivered 18. Maarten Bouwknecht (185-PG-94) posted 12, while Thomas Veenhoven (184-PG-94) had 10.

Croatian Drago Pasalic (208-C/F-84, agency: Court Side) had a very impressive game in the last round for top-ranked Groningen, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 10.
