Runs Officially Joins Men's Basketball, Cleared To Practice - Oct 4, 2012

Matthias Runs (208-C) has officially joined the St. Bonaventure men's basketball team and will have three years of playing eligibility beginning as a sophomore in the 2013-14 season.

Runs, a freshman psychology major, will not be allowed to play in games during the 2012-13 season due to the NCAA's "delayed enrollment" ruling. Since more than a year passed between Runs' high school graduation date and his enrollment at St. Bonaventure, the NCAA mandates that he "sit the year in residency" before becoming eligible.

Runs graduated from high school in the spring of 2010 and took a year off from schooling and basketball competition before enrolling at Spain's Canaries Basketball Academy (CBA) in the fall of 2011. The Netherlands native played in 22 games at CBA during the 2011-12 season. That competition combined with the "delayed enrollment" caused him to lose a year of eligibility.

Runs, who signed an athletics-grant-in-aid earlier this summer, has been taking classes at St. Bonaventure since the beginning of the semester. The 7-foot center is allowed to participate in team workouts and practices this year, but cannot play in games or travel with the team to away contests.

"I am glad a resolution has been reached regarding Matthias' eligibility," head coach Mark Schmidt said. "We are excited about Matthias' potential as a player. A year of practicing and working with our team will provide him a great opportunity to grow in our program, as well as continue his development as a player. We look forward to next season when Matthias will be eligible to play in games."
