Paul Oscar
Candiff
This time we talked some hoops with Dutch prospect Paul Candiff (184-PG-93), with whom we continue our interview-serie Dutch Prospects Abroad.
The 19-year-old offensive talent Paul Candiff (184-PG-93) has had an tumultuous 2011/12 season. His former team WCAA Bergen op Zoom went banktrupt, then picked up by Rotterdam Basketball College where he mostly played in the junior squad. Paul Candiff (184-PG-93) is a shooting guard who plays for Cuesta College.
Candiff will be a freshman but he is already receiving much praise. Despite being a small-school prospect, the former Dutch National U-18 team standout is getting noticed.

As a little kid, what did you want to become?
I always wanted to become a professional basketballer.

You were born in Antwerp,Belgium but grew up in Holland. When did you get involved in basketball, and why?
Yes I only lived for one year in Antwerp so I dont remember anything from Antwerp. When I was 6 my dad bought a basket for me, and I always went outside to shoot on it.

What made you decide to leave Holland to play ball at Cuesta College?
I didnt really think about going to Cuesta until my old club Bergen op Zoom got bankrupt. That was a big disappointment for me. After that I started thinking about going to Cuesta. The decision was also easier because my American family lives nearby cuesta and because the coach plays with a lot of Europeans.

How is it been like for you playing in the States? Is it been dramatically different?
Our team plays more of an European game style so it wasnt really hard for me to fit in. The teams we play against play way different than in Holland. The players are faster more athletic but also more out of control.

What is it like playing for Coach Blair?
I really like playing for Coach Blair. You can see that he has a lot of experience as coach and as a player.

You had a great start of the season, winning the Rabobank tournament with Cuesta and was named to the All-Tournament team. With a couple of days to digest it, what are your thoughts about that achievement?
It was a real nice achievement as a team, especially the final game where we came back from 20 points down. And I was happy that I had a good tournament.

Do you see yourself as one of the leaders on the squad? What do you see as your role on the team?
No, I dont see myself as a leader of this team. I never really been a leader. Our Sophomores are the leaders of the team this year. I see my role as a scoring 6th man of the bench.

What do you enjoy most about playing shooting guard?
Spotting up in the corner for three-pointers.

Speaking of the next few years, what do you have for goals for the coming year and for the five years after that?

I hope I will have 2 good years at Cuesta, and that I can get a scholarship from a D1 school. After my 4 years in America I want to come back to Europe or Holland and play professional there.

Thanks Paul for the time doing this interview. Wish You and a successful season.
