We bring you last week's top performances from Dutchs who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Henk Norel

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Henk Norel (214-87, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB. He could not help CAI Zaragoza (11-9) in their last game. Despite Norel's good performance CAI Zaragoza lost 77-82 at home to the lower-ranked (#8) Asefa Estudiantes. He had a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 11 rebounds. Norel also added 2 blocks in 29 minutes on the court. It's Norel's first season with the team. Norel is currently fifth on the list of best rebounders with 6.4rpg. He also averaged so far 12.1ppg, 2FGP: 58.6%(106-181) and FT: 54.7% in the 20 games he played so far. Norel is currently a member of the Dutch senior national team.

Robin Smeulders

   #2. Second place goes to an international forward Robin Smeulders (207-87, agency: Court Side, college: Portland, currently plays in Germany). He contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked ALBA Berlin (12-6) 82-67 in the German BBL on Sunday night. Smeulders scored 10 points in 20 minutes. EWE Baskets Oldenburg (13-6) is placed fourth in the BBL. This year Smeulders averages: 7.2ppg, 3.5rpg, 2FGP: 59.2%(45-76), 3FGP: 25.0% and FT: 72.7% in the 19 games. He has a dual citizenship: Dutch and German. Smeulders is in the roster of the Dutch senior national team.

Thomas van der Mars

   #3. The Dutch player who performed third best last week abroad was former U20 international center Thomas van der Mars (208-90, currently plays college basketball in the States). van der Mars led Portland to a victory against the Loyola Marymount University (1-9) 69-60 in the NCAA last Thursday. He scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 33 minutes. The University of Portland has not so impressive 2-8 conference record this season. They ended the series of six consecutive loses. This year van der Mars' overall stats are: 7.4ppg, 3.8rpg, 2FGP: 48.2% and FT: 75.0% in the 20 games. He played for the Dutch U20 national team three years ago.

   #4. Center Robert Krabbendam (213-86, also represented by Court Side, college: Virginia Tech, currently plays in Cyprus), who plays in the Cypriot Division A was not able to help Apollon (8-10) in their last game. Despite Krabbendam's good performance Apollon lost 83-96 on the road to the higher-ranked (#3) Etha. He scored 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 26 minutes. It was Apollon's fourth consecutive loss in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This year Krabbendam's total stats are: 5.1ppg and 2.9rpg in the nine games. He used to play for the Dutch national team back in 2010.

Former U20 international forward Kadeem Pantophlet (201-90, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to secure a victory for the Duquesne (0-8) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Pantophlet's good performance the Duquesne was defeated 68-60 in St.Bonaventure, NY by the St.Bonaventure University. He scored 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Pantophlet has averaged so far 5.1ppg and 2.9rpg. He used to play for the Dutch U20 national team four years ago.

   #6. Forward Kevin van Wijk (203-89, is currently at the American university) managed to help Valparaiso University in a victory against the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (1-7) crushing them 71-40 in the NCAA on Friday night. van Wijk scored 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 13 minutes. The Valparaiso University has a very good 7-2 conference record this season. van Wijk has averaged so far 5.1ppg and 2.9rpg in the nine games. He is a former U16 international player as he played for the Dutch team eight years ago.

   #7. Former U20 international point guard Charlon Kloof (190-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) faced previously mentioned Kadeem Pantophlet in the NCAA last game. Kloof contributed to St.Bonaventure's victory against the University of Duquesne (0-8) 68-60. He scored 5 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists. Kloof has averaged so far 5.1ppg and 2.9rpg. He used to play for the Dutch U20 national team three years ago.

   #8. Center Jito Kok (206-94, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the San Diego (6-4) in their game against the Gonzaga University (9-0) in the NCAA. Kok scored only 4 points, had 5 rebounds and made 4 blocks in 17 minutes. The San Diego was edged 65-63 on their home court in San Diego, CA by the Gonzaga University. Kok has averaged so far 5.1ppg and 2.9rpg in the nine games. He plays currently for the Dutch U18 national team.

Former U18 international center Olaf Schaftenaar (206-93, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an easy victory against the University of Utah (2-8) 82-64 in the NCAA on Wednesday night. Schaftenaar recorded 7 points and blocked 3 shots. The Oregon State University has rather weak 2-7 conference record this season. Schaftenaar has averaged so far 5.1ppg and 2.9rpg. He used to play for the Dutch U18 national team two years ago.

   #10. Forward Shane Hammink (201-94, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to a 1-point LSU's victory against the Mississippi State University (2-7) 69-68 in the NCAA on Saturday night. Hammink scored only 2 points in 8 minutes on the court. The Louisiana State University has 4-5 conference record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Hammink has averaged so far 7.4ppg, 4.9rpg and 1.1apg in the 16 games. He is a naturalized American. Hammink is U18 international player who is currently on the Dutch National Team roster. Strangely he has never played in Holland.


The list of other players, who all have Dutch passport but never been selected to any of Dutch national teams:

   #1. Experienced Stanley Ocitti (203-F/C-80, college: Binghamton, currently plays in United Kingdom) was the major contributor in a Worcester Wolves' victory against the closely-ranked Manchester Giants (8-15) 88-75 in the British BBL last Friday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 10 rebounds. Ocitti also added 3 assists. Worcester Wolves (11-9) is placed sixth in the BBL. Ocitti is ranked fourth on the list of the best rebounders in the league and also on the list of best blockers (fifth place). He has very reliable stats this season: 13.6ppg, 9.3rpg and 1.5apg. Ocitti is a naturalized American.

   #2. Kim Tillie (210-PF-88, agency: Priority Sports, college: Utah, currently plays in Spain) contributed to an UCAM Murcia's victory against the 11th-ranked Blusens Monbus (9-11) 83-77 in the Spanish ACB in Sunday night's game. He scored 9 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. UCAM Murcia (24-6) is placed in the ACB. Tillie's overall stats this season are: 7.4ppg and 3.8rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Dutch and French.

   #3. Devon Van Oostrum (190-G-93, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) could not help Caceres Basket (7-10) in their last game on Friday. Despite Van Oostrum's very good performance Caceres Basket was defeated 71-67 on the road by the higher-ranked Planasa NV (#6). He was the top scorer with 15 points. Van Oostrum's total stats this season are: 8.8ppg, 2.4rpg and 2.2apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Dutch and British.

   #4. Joey van Zegeren McAdam (208-F-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) was not able to help the Virginia Tech (2-7) in their game against the University of North Carolina (6-3) in the NCAA. van Zegeren McAdam cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 3 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 13 minutes. The Virginia Tech lost in an overtime 60-72 in Chapel Hill, NC to the University of North Carolina. It was Virginia Tech's fifth consecutive loss in a row. van Zegeren McAdam has averaged so far 5.1ppg and 2.9rpg in the nine games he played so far.

   #5. Josh Duinker (210-F/C-89, college: Richmond, currently plays in Spain) is a teammate of previously mentioned Devon Van Oostrum and both played together in the last Spanish LEB Gold game. Duinker was not able to secure a victory for Caceres Basket (7-10) in their game against Planasa NV (8-9). He cannot count Friday's game as one of the best ones. Duinker scored only 3 points. Caceres Basket was defeated 71-67 in Pamplona by the higher-ranked Planasa NV (#6). Duinker has averaged so far 7.4ppg, 4.9rpg and 1.1apg. He has both Australian and Dutch nationalities.

   #6. Jonah Callenbach (194-F/G-93, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Fontedoso Carrefour in their game against La Palma in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division). Callenbach cannot count Friday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 3 points. His team was badly defeated by 17 points 62-45. Callenbach has averaged so far 3.5ppg and 1.1rpg. He also holds two passports: Portuguese and Dutch.

   #7. Daniel Kickert (208-C/F-83, college: St.Mary's, CA, currently plays in Ukraine) led Dnipro to a surprising victory over the third-ranked Mykolaiv 82-63 in the Ukrainian Superleague last Sunday. Kickert was MVP of the game. He recorded 19 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 34 minutes. Kickert has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 17.3ppg, 5.4rpg and 1.4apg in the 25 games. Kickert holds both Australian and Dutch passports.

Zorg and Zekerheid Leiden (Eredivisie) agreed terms with American forward Daviyon Draper (201-98kg). He just graduated from Florida International University (NCAA). Draper has played there for the last three years. In 31 games he had very impressive stats: 15.9ppg, 7.0rpg, 2.2apg and 1.0spg last season. As mentioned above he is just out of the college and it will be his first season as a pro. Maxxcom BS Weert (Eredivisie) re-signed 25-year old power forward Joost Padberg (202-91). He has played there for the last six seasons. In 18 Eredivisie games he averaged 6.9ppg, 3.5rpg and 1.4apg last season. Padberg's team made it to the Eredivisie Semifinals in 2010. He represented Holland at the European Championships U18 Division B in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) seven years ago. Great Britain - Netherlands 68:79 Netherlands celebrated the second straight victory in the exhibition series versus Great Britain. Worthy de Jong (194-SG-88) tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Dutch team to the victory in Manchester. Great Britain jumped to an early lead.
