Here is the weekly review of the top performing Dutch players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Henk Norel (214-87, currently plays in Spain). He was the major contributor in a CAI Zaragoza's victory against the closely-ranked Valencia Basket (13-9) 76-62 in the Spanish ACB in Sunday night's game. Norel recorded 17 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 27 minutes on the court. CAI Zaragoza (13-9) is placed seventh in the ACB. It's Norel's first season with the team. Norel belongs to league's best rebounders and is ranked #5 with 6.5rpg. He also averaged so far 12.4ppg, 2FGP: 59.1%(120-203) and FT: 56.1% in the 22 games he played so far. Norel is currently a member of the Dutch senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to former U16 international forward Kevin van Wijk (203-89, currently plays college basketball in the States). He led Valparaiso to a victory against the Youngstown State University (6-7) 73-64 in the NCAA last Tuesday. van Wijk recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 14 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks. The Valparaiso University has quite an impressive 11-3 conference record this season. van Wijk's team will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. And that game will be critical. van Wijk has relatively good stats this season: 12.4ppg, 2FGP: 59.1%(120-203) and FT: 56.1%. He played for the Dutch U16 national team in 2005.

   #3. The Dutch player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced international center Francisco Elson (211-76, college: California, currently plays in Iran). He contributed to Mahram's victory against the closely-ranked Foolad Mahan (15-3) 96-89 in the Iranian Superleague in Monday night's game. Elson recorded 9 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Mahram Tehran (14-3) is placed third in the Superleague. Elson is currently seventh on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (fourth place). This season he averages: 8.4ppg, 6.6rpg, 1.1bpg, 2.4spg. Elson is also a member of the Dutch senior national team.

   #4. Forward Robin Smeulders (207-87, agency: Court Side, college: Portland, currently plays in Germany) contributed to a EWE Baskets' victory against the 11th-ranked s Oliver Baskets (11-13) 76-65 in the German BBL in Sunday night's game. Smeulders scored 7 points in 23 minutes. EWE Baskets Oldenburg (15-7) is placed third in the BBL. This year Smeulders' overall stats are: 6.9ppg and 3.5rpg in the 22 games. He has a dual citizenship: Dutch and German. Smeulders is also Dutch national team player.

   #5. Former U20 international center Thomas van der Mars (208-90, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Portland (4-11) in their last game. Despite van der Mars' good performance the Portland lost 63-75 at home to the Santa Clara University. He scored 11 points, had 6 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 25 minutes. van der Mars' team will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. This year van der Mars' total stats are: 7.4ppg and 4.8rpg in the 20 games. He used to play for the Dutch U20 national team three years ago.

Power forward Roeland Schaftenaar (211-88, college: Oregon St., currently plays in Spain) was not able to help one of league's weakest teams Leche Rio Breogan (10-9) in their game against Meridiano Alicante (12-7) in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division). Schaftenaar recorded only 4 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Leche Rio Breogan was defeated 70-60 on the road by the higher-ranked Meridiano Alicante (#4). They ended the series of three consecutive victories. Schaftenaar has averaged so far 6.7ppg, 5.1rpg and 1.7apg. He is a former international player as he played for the Dutch senior team three years ago.

Former U18 international center Olaf Schaftenaar (206-93, is currently at the American university) was not able to secure a victory for the Oregon St. (3-12) in their game against the University of Oregon (12-4) in the NCAA. Schaftenaar scored 6 points. The Oregon St. was defeated 85-75 in Eugene, OR by the University of Oregon. It was Oregon St.'s fourth consecutive loss in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Schaftenaar has averaged so far 9.3ppg, 2.1rpg and 2.2apg. He used to play for the Dutch U18 national team two years ago.

Forward Shane Hammink (201-94, currently plays college basketball in the States) managed to help Louisiana State University in a victory against the The University of Arkansas (8-7) 65-60 in the NCAA in Wednesday night's game. Hammink recorded only 2 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 8 minutes on the court. The Louisiana State University has 8-7 conference record this season. There are only three games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. So now every game will be extremely important. Hammink has averaged so far 9.3ppg, 2.1rpg and 2.2apg in the 19 games. He is a naturalized American. Hammink plays currently for the Dutch U18 national team. Strangely he has never played in Holland.

Former international center Robert Krabbendam (213-86, also represented by Court Side, college: Virginia Tech, currently plays in Cyprus) helped Apollon win their game against the closely-ranked Apoel (12-9) 83-79 in the Cypriot Division A on Friday night. He scored 5 points in 9 minutes. Forex Time Apollon (9-12) is placed fifth in the Division A. Krabbendam has averaged so far 5.1ppg and 3.5rpg in the 11 games. He used to play for the Dutch national team three years ago.

The list of other players, who all have Dutch passport but never been selected to any of Dutch national teams:

   #1. Experienced Stanley Ocitti (203-F/C-80, college: Binghamton, currently plays in United Kingdom) was the major contributor in a Worcester Wolves' victory against the closely-ranked Durham Wildcats 83-79 in the British BBL on Sunday night. Ocitti recorded 18 points and grabbed 8 rebounds (made all of his six free throws) in 35 minutes. Worcester Wolves (15-9) is placed fifth in the BBL. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. Ocitti is ranked fifth on the list of the best rebounders in the league and also on the list of best blockers (fifth place). He has very reliable stats this year: 14.3ppg, 8.8rpg, 1.7apg and 1.1bpg in the 23 games he played so far. Ocitti is a naturalized American.

   #2. Daniel Kickert (208-C/F-83, college: St.Mary's, CA, currently plays in Ukraine), who plays in the Ukrainian Superleague could not help Budivelnyk (25-8) to beat BC Odessa (12-20). He scored 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. It was his first game for Budivelnyk this season. The league leader Budivelnyk was edged 87-85 at home by the much lower-ranked (#11) BC Odessa. It was Budivelnyk's first loss after seven consecutive victories. Kickert has a dual citizenship: Australian and Dutch.

   #3. Kim Tillie (210-PF-88, agency: Priority Sports, college: Utah, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB was not able to help UCAM Murcia (24-6) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his good performance his team was badly defeated 79-62 on their home court in Murcia by the lower-ranked Regal FC Barcelona (#3). Tillie was the second best scorer with 10 points. Tillie's overall stats this season are: 7.6ppg and 3.6rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Dutch and French.

   #4. Josh Duinker (210-F/C-89, college: Richmond, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for Caceres Basket (8-12) in their game against Lleida Basquet (8-11) in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division). Despite his very good performance last Friday He was the second best scorer with 13 points. Duinker also added 6 rebounds. Duinker's total stats this season are: 7.4ppg and 4.8rpg. He has both Australian and Dutch nationalities.

   #5. Devon Van Oostrum (190-G-93, currently plays in Spain) is a teammate of previously mentioned Josh Duinker and both played together in the last Spanish LEB Gold game. Van Oostrum couldn't help Caceres Basket (8-12) in their game against Lleida Basquet (8-11). He recorded 6 points in 17 minutes. Caceres Basket lost 70-83 on the road to the higher-ranked (#8) Lleida_Basquet. Van Oostrum has averaged so far 9.3ppg, 2.1rpg and 2.2apg in the 19 games. He also holds two passports: Dutch and British.

   #6. Joey van Zegeren McAdam (208-F-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the Virginia Tech in their game against the University of Miami, Florida in the NCAA. van Zegeren McAdam cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 2 points. His team was badly defeated by 18 points 76-58. van Zegeren McAdam has averaged so far 9.3ppg, 2.1rpg and 2.2apg.

Dukes Unlimited Den Bosch (Eredivisie) inked 26-year old American swingman Justin Watts (196-90, college: N.Carolina). He played in the summer at Vaqueros de Agua Prieta in Mexican CIBACOPA, but left. In four games he averaged 11.8ppg, 1.8rpg and 2.3apg. The last season Watts played at Defensor in Uruguayan LUB where in 7 games he had 12.3ppg, 3.9rpg and 1.6apg. He won Australian QBL championship title in 2013. Former international Swingman Dimeo Van Der Horst (197-G/F-91) had a great game in the last round for Amsterdam, receiving a Player of the Week award for round 4. The 25-year old player was the main contributor (19 points, five rebounds and seven assists) to his team's victory, helping them to beat Weert (#8, 0-4), the league's bottom-ranked team 95-83. Eredivisie Round 4: Groningen keeps a leadership position - 3 days ago

After 4 rounds played we can already see who rules in the Eredivisie and who belongs to weaker ones. Host teams show no mercy winning all games. The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Groningen as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Groningen defeated 6th ranked Leeuwarden at home 73-56. The game was mostly controlled by Groningen. Leeuwarden managed to win fourth quarter 15-11. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Worth to mentio...   [read more]
