We bring you last week's top performances from Dutch players who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Thomas van der Mars

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Thomas van der Mars (208-90, college: Portland, currently plays in Estonia). van der Mars led Rapla to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked Valga (12-20) crushing them 92-71 in the Estonian Alexela KML in Tuesday night's game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 16 rebounds. van der Mars also added 3 assists; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. AVIS Rapla (20-12) is placed second in the Alexela KML. van der Mars has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 16.1ppg, 12.5rpg, 1.1apg, 2FGP: 63.8%(183-287) and FT: 69.9%. van der Mars is currently a member of the Dutch senior national team.

Josh Duinker

   #2. Second place goes to former international power forward Josh Duinker (209-89, college: Richmond, currently plays in New Zealand). He was the major contributor in Saints' victory against the fifth-ranked Mountain Airs (3-4) 100-87 in the New Zealand NBL last Thursday. Duinker had a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 12 rebounds. He also added 3 assists in 25 minutes. Wellington Saints (7-0) are placed first in the NBL. So far his team won all seven games in the Regular Season. Duinker has very impressive stats this year: 15.7ppg, 8.1rpg, 2.3apg, 2FGP: 55.1%(38-69), 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 86.2% in seven games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Dutch and Australian. Former Zorg and Zekerheid Leiden starter played for the Dutch national team in 2013.

   #3. The Dutch player who performed third best last week abroad was former U20 international center Jito Kok (206-94, agency: Court Side, college: San Diego, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Thomas van der Mars. But that was another game of his team in Estonian Alexela KML which we would like to mention. Kok led Rapla to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked Valga (12-20) crushing them 99-70. He scored 12 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished 3 assists. AVIS Rapla (20-12) is placed second in the Alexela KML. Kok's overall stats this season are: 5.6ppg, 3.4rpg, 2FGP: 49.1% and FT: 59.4%. He played for the Dutch U20 national team three years ago.

   #4. Center Nicolas de Jong (210-88, currently plays in France) could not help Chalons-Reims (9-19) in their last game. Despite de Jong's good performance Chalons-Reims was edged 84-82 at home by the higher-ranked (#10) Limoges CSP Elite. He had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 10 rebounds in 24 minutes. It was Chalons-Reims' fourth consecutive loss in a row. de Jong has relatively good stats this year: 12.6ppg and 3.3rpg in 26 games. He is also Dutch national team player.

   #5. International guard Charlon Kloof (190-90, agency: Octagon Europe, college: St.Bonaventure, currently plays in FYR Macedonia) led MZT Skopje to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked Feni Industries (1-6) 77-61 in the FYR Macedonian Prva Liga last Saturday. Kloof scored 13 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists. KK MZT Skopje Aerodrom (7-0) is placed first in Places 1-6 group. So far his team won all seven games in the Second Stage. There are only three games left until the end of the Second Stage. So now every game will be critical. It's Kloof's first season with the team. This year he has relatively solid stats: 10.4ppg, 4.1rpg, 4.4apg and 1.4spg. Kloof is another player who holds two passports: Surinamese and Dutch. He plays currently for the Dutch national team.

   #6. Shooting guard Worthy de Jong (194-88, currently plays in France) was not able to help SO Maritime Boulogne (10-17) in their last game. Despite de Jong's very good performance SO Maritime Boulogne lost 76-86 on the road to the much higher-ranked (#7) ALM Evreux. He was the second best scorer with 15 points in 20 minutes. This year de Jong's overall stats are: 9.5ppg, 3.0rpg, 1.9apg and 1.6spg in 27 games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Dutch National Team roster.

International power forward Roeland Schaftenaar (211-88, college: Oregon St., currently plays in Greece) managed to help A.G.O Rethymno Aegean to win against the league outsider Doxa Lefkadas (4-22) 80-67 in the Greek A1 in Thursday night's game. Schaftenaar scored 5 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished 4 assists. A.G.O Rethymno Aegean (13-13) is placed sixth in the A1. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Schaftenaar's total stats this season are: 5.9ppg, 4.3rpg and 1.1apg. He is also Dutch national team player.

   #8. Center Henk Norel (213-87, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for Zaragoza (8-19) in their game against FC Barcelona (18-8) in the Spanish Liga Endesa. Norel recorded 6 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks in 18 minutes. Zaragoza was edged 91-88 in Barcelona by the much higher-ranked (#5) FC Barcelona. It was Zaragoza's fourth consecutive loss in a row. Norel is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fifth year in Zaragoza's roster. This season his total stats are: 9.3ppg, 6.2rpg and 1.2apg in 24 games. Norel used to play for the Dutch national team back in 2015.

   #9. Former international center Kevin Bleeker (208-93, also represented by Court Side, college: Canisius, currently plays in Spain) led Navarra to a victory against the closely-ranked Agustinos-Leclerc (13-15) 76-68 in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division) on Saturday night. He recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 11 rebounds. Bleeker also added and 3 steals; not bad, considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. Basket Navarra de Pamplona (15-13) is placed eighth in the LEB Silver. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. Bleeker has averaged so far 6.6ppg and 5.0rpg. He used to play for the Dutch national team three years ago.

   #10. Power forward Jeroen van der List (213-89, college: Indian Hills CC, currently plays in Japan) couldn't help Shinshu BW (12-41) in their last game. Despite van der List's very good performance the sixth-placed Shinshu BW (12-41) lost 71-77 in Tokyo to the higher-ranked (#3) Earthfriends Z in the Central group. He was the top scorer with 18 points. van der List also added 8 rebounds in a mere 15 minutes. It was Shinshu BW's 13th consecutive loss in a row. van der List has reliable stats this year: 14.3ppg, 8.6rpg, 1.5apg and 1.5bpg in 20 games. He is a former international player as three years ago he still played for the Dutch senior national team.

   #11. Former U16 international forward Kevin van Wijk (203-89, college: Valparaiso, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Melilla Baloncesto in their game against Castello in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division). van Wijk cannot count Friday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 3 points in 10 minutes. His team lost 64-77. van Wijk has averaged so far 6.0ppg, 3.3rpg and 1.1apg in 31 games. He used to play for the Dutch U16 national team twelve years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Dutch passport but never been selected to any of Dutch national teams:

   #1. Kim Tillie (210-PF-88, college: Utah, currently plays in Euroleague) could not help Baskonia (17-13) in their last game. Despite his good performance Baskonia lost 79-84 at home to the lower-ranked (#10) Zalgiris. Tillie scored 13 points, had 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 32 minutes. There are only three games left until the end of the Euroleague Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This year Tillie averages: 7.2ppg, 3.7rpg and 1.1apg in 29 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Dutch and French.

   #2. Aaron Doornekamp (201-F-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help CB Canarias in their game against Andorra (14-12) in the Spanish Liga Endesa. Despite his good performance last Saturday Doornekamp recorded 11 points. It's Doornekamp's first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 12.0ppg, 3.9rpg and 1.3apg. Doornekamp is another player who holds two passports: Canadian and Dutch.

   #3. Ryan Broekhoff (200-F-90, college: Valparaiso, currently plays in VTB United League) was the major contributor in Lokomotiv's victory against the seventh-ranked VEF Riga (10-12) 80-69 in the VTB United League on Thursday night. He scored 18 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 21 minutes. Lokomotiv Kuban (16-5) is placed fourth in group A. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the VTB United League Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Broekhoff averages: 7.8ppg, 5.2rpg and 1.1apg in 21 games. He has both Australian and Dutch nationalities.

   #4. Tom Slutsky (193-G-92, currently plays in Israel) contributed to an easy victory against the fourth-ranked Galil Elion (10-16) crushing them 94-66 in the Israeli National League (second division) last Saturday. Slutsky recorded 10 points. Hapoel Afula (12-14) is placed first in Play-Downs group. This season Slutsky averages only 3.8ppg. He also holds two passports: Dutch and Israeli. Despite Slutsky's Dutch nationality, he previously played for the Israeli U18 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Dutch team.

   #5. Jamal Smith (197-F-92, college: Chattanooga St, currently plays in Belgium) was not able to secure a victory for Houthalen (15-11) in their game against Waregem (18-7) in the Belgian Top Division I (second division). Smith recorded 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Houthalen was crushed 105-64 on the road by the higher-ranked Waregem (#3). Smith has averaged so far 9.0ppg, 4.1rpg, 1.2apg and 1.2spg. He is a naturalized American. Smith used to play for The Bright Kings Den Helder in Dutch league.   




Chase Fieler
Oostende lands Chase Fieler, ex Groningen - 3 days ago
Defending champion Telenet BC Oostende (Euromillions League) tabbed 25-year old American forward Chase Fieler (203-93kg-92, college: FGCU). He has played for the last two years at Donar Groningen in Dutch Eredivisie. Fieler managed to play in three leagues last year (!!!). In 35 Eredivisie games he averaged 15.0ppg, 7.5rpg, 3.0apg, 1.5spg and 1.4bpg. He helped them to win the league title (twice) and the Supercup (also twice). New Heroes Basketball Den Bosch (Eredivisie) confirmed in their roster 22-year old swingman Pim De Vries (193-95). He has played there for the last five seasons. In 27 Eredivisie games he had 3.2ppg and 2.3rpg last season. De Vries helped them to make it to the Supercup final and to the league semifinals. His team won Dutch Cup in 2016. Van Den Elzen re-signs at Den Bosch - 6 days ago
New Heroes Basketball Den Bosch (Eredivisie) confirmed in their roster small forward Stan Van Den Elzen (195). He played there last season. But in four Eredivisie games he recorded just 0.3ppg. Van Den Elzen's team made it to the Dutch final. He represented Holland at the European Championships U16 Division B in Sofia seventeen years ago.
