Ten days ago, Keflavik Basketball Club of Iceland has signed Billy Baptist (6'5''-F-87, college: Quincy), to play with the team in the Dominos League in Iceland. Baptist has been a Kankakee Soldier for 3 seasons and has helped the Soldiers to two IBA League Championships. This year, Baptist fifth in points scored in the Independent Basketball Association, averaging 28 ppg in 13 games. In the rebounding category, Baptist leads all players in the IBA, pulling down 136 rebounds with an average of 10 per game.
"Billy has been an incredible asset to our organization on and off the court. He has spent countless hours doing positive thinks with the kids in the community to encourage them to do good things with their lives. He will be missed but we are excited for him to take another step in his professional career", stated head coach Barry Bradford .
Keflavik is the most successful club in Iceland last 25 years and has won the Icelandic Championship nine times since 1989 and the Cup Championship six times. This season the team has struggled a little bit as the team has gone through lot of changes and most of the players are under 20 years old. Still the team is in 6th place only three wins from the 1st place and has gone through to the final-8 of the Cup Championship. Billy's first game for Keflavik is slated for the 4th of January in the league and then a massive game in the final-8 of the Cup against local rivals in Njarvk.
Keflavik Basketball Club have high hopes on Billy and expect him to bring a little bit of everything to the team and help the team processing to retain the Cup Championship and to make a go at the Icelandic Championship. Sigurour Ingimundarson , Keflaviks head coach, is looking forward to work with Billy. "We are happy to have signed Billy and hope that he can help us on both ends of the court. We have followed him for some while and when we released one of our Americans in December he was our first option. He has experience of playing in Europe which Is a big plus so we are positive he will do well here and help the team achieve something".
On Billy Baptists departure from the Kankakee County Soldiers, head coach Barry Bradford said "Billy was having a career year the season, proving himself to be a great scorer, rebounder and defender. I know there organization will be more than pleased with his abilities".
