Jakob Sigurdarson's 30 points make him top Icelandic player abroad of the week - Feb 21, 2013

We bring you last week's top performances from Icelandic who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Jakob Sigurdarson (192-82, college: Birm.Southern, currently plays in Sweden). He led Sundsvall Dragons to a victory over the eighth-ranked LF Basket (12-16) 89-83 in the Swedish Basketligan in Friday night's game. Sigurdarson was MVP of the game. He recorded 30 points (!!!), 4 rebounds and 6 assists in 38 minutes on the court. Sundsvall Dragons (25-4) is placed first in the Basketligan. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Sigurdarson's fourth season with the team. Sigurdarson is currently fifth on the list of top scorers with 18.5ppg. He also averaged so far 3.3rpg, 3.0apg, 2FGP: 52.2%, 3FGP: 38.6% and FT: 91.8%(123-134) in the 28 games he played so far. Sigurdarson is currently a member of the Icelandic senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international forward Hlynur Baeringsson (200-82, currently plays in Sweden) is a teammate of previously mentioned Jakob Sigurdarson. But that was another game of his team in Swedish Basketligan which we would like to mention. Baeringsson was the main contributor in a Sundsvall Dragons' victory against the ninth-ranked KFUM Jamtland (7-22) 108-90. He was the best player in that game. Baeringsson recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added and 3 steals. Sundsvall Dragons (25-4) is placed first in the Basketligan. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Baeringsson is the league's best rebounder. He has very reliable stats this season: 14.4ppg, 10.4rpg, 3.5apg, 1.4spg, 2FGP: 58.6%(123-210) and FT: 73.3%. Baeringsson is in the roster of the Icelandic senior national team.

Hoerdur Vilhjalmsson

   #3. The Icelandic player who performed third best last week abroad was an international point guard Hoerdur Vilhjalmsson (194-88, currently plays in Germany), who plays in the German BBL. He could not help Mitteldeutscher BC (9-14) in their last game. Despite Vilhjalmsson's very good performance Mitteldeutscher BC lost 67-75 on the road to the much higher-ranked (#3) EWE Baskets. He was the top scorer with 21 points in 22 minutes. This year Vilhjalmsson averages: 9.7ppg, 2.3rpg, 2.1apg, 2FGP: 43.8%, 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 76.2% in the 23 games. He is also a member of the Icelandic senior national team.

   #4. Guard Jon Stefansson (196-82, currently plays in Spain) managed to help CAI Zaragoza to win against the 15th-ranked Cajasol (7-14) 75-67 in the Spanish ACB in Sunday night's game. Stefansson scored only 2 points and added 4 assists. CAI Zaragoza (12-9) is placed seventh in the ACB. Stefansson's overall stats this season are: 6.3ppg, 2.0rpg and 1.6apg. He is also Icelandic national team player.

   #5. International small forward Axel Karason (194-83, currently plays in Denmark) contributed to a 3-point Vaerlose's victory against the closely-ranked Naestved (12-13) 85-82 in the Danish Ligaen last Sunday. Karason recorded 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 31 minutes. Vaerlose BBK (9-10) is placed fifth in the Ligaen. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Karason has relatively good stats this year: 11.0ppg, 7.2rpg and 1.6apg in the 25 games. He plays currently for the Icelandic national team.

   #6. Small forward Haukur Palsson (197-92, college: Maryland, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help Assignia Manresa (4-17) in their game against Real Madrid (20-1) in the Spanish ACB. Palsson did not beat the league record on Sunday evening. He scored only 2 points. Assignia Manresa was crushed 104-70 in Madrid by the leading Real. Palsson's overall stats this season are: 1.5ppg and 1.1rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Icelandic National Team roster.

   #7. Former U20 international center Gudni Valentinusson (204-85, currently plays in Denmark) was not able to secure a victory for Aarhus BC (6-19) in their game against Horsholm (10-9) in the Danish Ligaen. Valentinusson cannot count it as his best performance. He recorded only 2 points in 11 minutes. Aarhus BC lost 81-86 at home to the higher-ranked (#4) Horsholm. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. This year Valentinusson's overall stats are: 3.5ppg and 2.0rpg in the 22 games. He used to play for the Icelandic U20 national team eight years ago.

He started the season at Thor AK Akureyri in Dominos League. Thomas helped his team get promotion to Dominos League. In 13 games he had very impressive stats: 16.4ppg, 7.3rpg, 2.9apg and 1.6spg this season. Here is the weekly review of the top performing Icelandic players, who play currently abroad. This week's number one is an international small forward Haukur Palsson (197-92). He could not help SPO Rouen (4-10) in their last game. Despite Palsson's good performance SPO Rouen lost 84-95 on the road to the higher-ranked (#11) Aix-Maurienne.    [read more]

The round 16 was rather boring as all games ended with very predictable results. D1 top team - Hottur (13-1) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed ninth ranked Armann (0-15) in Egilsstadir 102-55. The game without a history. Hottur led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game.
