We bring you last week's top performances from Icelandic who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Jakob Sigurdarson

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international point guard Jakob Sigurdarson (192-82, college: Birm.Southern, currently plays in Sweden). He was the major contributor in a Boras Basket's victory against the league leader BC Lulea (21-7) 99-90 in the Swedish Basketligan in Tuesday night's game. Sigurdarson scored 23 points and added 4 passes in 32 minutes on the court. Boras Basket (15-14) is placed sixth in the Basketligan. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Sigurdarson has relatively good stats this year: 13.7ppg, 3.3rpg, 2.4apg, 2FGP: 51.5%, 3FGP: 34.9% and FT: 94.6%(88-93) in 28 games he played so far. He played for the Icelandic senior national team two years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an international small forward Haukur Palsson (197-92, college: Maryland, currently plays in France). Palsson led SPO Rouen to a victory against the league outsider JA Vichy (8-13) 76-66 in the French ProB (second division) last Tuesday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting 12 rebounds. Palsson also added 3 assists. SPO Rouen Basket (10-11) is placed 11th in the ProB. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This season Palsson has relatively solid stats: 11.8ppg, 4.9rpg, 3.9apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 38.1%, 3FGP: 40.3% and FT: 74.2%. He is in the roster of the Icelandic senior national team.

Elvar Fridriksson

   #3. The Icelandic player who performed third best last week abroad was an international guard Elvar Fridriksson (183-94, college: LIU Brooklyn, currently plays in NCAA2). Fridriksson could not help the Barry University (13-5) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Barry University was edged 97-95 on the road by the Palm Beach Atlantic University. Fridriksson scored 31 points (!!!) and added 5 assists in 43 minutes. There are only three games left until the end of the NCAA2 Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Fridriksson has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 18.3ppg, 4.3rpg, 7.6apg, 1.4spg, 2FGP: 56.9%(87-153), 3FGP: 38.4% and FT: 87.9% in 23 games. Ex-UMFN Njardvik player is also a member of the Icelandic senior national team.

Martin Hermannsson

Guard Martin Hermannsson (190-94, college: LIU Brooklyn, currently plays in France) contributed to an easy victory against the 14th-ranked Chorale de Roanne (9-12) crushing them 96-70 in the French ProB (second division) in Tuesday night's game. Hermannsson scored 19 points, had 6 rebounds and dished 7 assists; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. Etoile Charleville-Mezieres (12-9) is placed third in the ProB. They ended the series of five consecutive loses. This season Hermannsson has very high stats. He averages: 17.7ppg, 4.0rpg and 5.8apg. Hermannsson is also Icelandic national team player.

   #5. U20 international guard Kari Jonsson (190-97, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to help the Drexel (3-15) in their last game. Despite his good performance the Drexel lost 70-80 at home to the James Madison University. Jonsson scored 14 points (went 6 for 6 at the free throw line) in 26 minutes. It was Drexel's third consecutive loss in a row. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Jonsson has reliable stats this year: 10.1ppg, 2.3rpg and 2.0apg in 28 games. He plays currently for the Icelandic U20 national team.

   #6. Forward Kristofer Acox (198-93, currently studies in the States) was not able to secure a victory for the Furman (14-4) in their game against the Samford University (8-10) in the NCAA. Acox did not beat the league record on Saturday evening. He recorded only 3 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. The Furman was defeated 67-63 in Birmingham by the Samford University. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. It's Acox's fourth season with the team. Acox's stats this year are: 12.7ppg, 7.5rpg, 1.4apg and 1.3spg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Icelandic National Team roster.

International point guard Aegir Steinarsson (185-91, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management, college: Newberry, currently plays in Spain) managed to help San Pablo Inmobiliaria Miraflores Burgos in a victory against the league outsider Marin (6-20) 89-79 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Saturday night's game. Steinarsson scored only 2 points and had 4 steals in 23 minutes. San Pablo Inmobiliaria Miraflores Burgos (17-9) is placed third in the LEB Gold. It's Steinarsson's first season with the team. This year his overall stats are: 5.3ppg, 2.5rpg and 3.7apg in 26 games. Steinarsson is also Icelandic national team player.

   #8. Swingman Kristinn Palsson (198-97, is currently at the American university) couldn't help the Marist (5-12) in their game against the Canisius College (8-12) in the NCAA. He cannot count Thursday's game as one of the best ones. Palsson scored only 3 points. The Marist was defeated 77-73 on their home court in Poughkeepsie by the Canisius College. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Palsson's total stats this season are: 4.4ppg, 2.7rpg and 1.4apg. He plays currently for the Icelandic U20 national team.

U20 international guard Jon Gudmundsson (193-96, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the Davidson (5-7) in their game against the Rhode Island University (2-14) in the NCAA. Gudmundsson cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 2 points in 13 minutes. The Davidson was edged 73-70 on their home court in Davidson by the Rhode Island University. Gudmundsson's team will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. This year Gudmundsson's total stats are: 7.9ppg, 4.1rpg, 3.4apg and 1.2spg in 28 games. He is also in the roster of the Icelandic U20 national team.

Thor AK Akureyri (Dominos League) added to their roster 26-year old American power forward Marques Oliver (201-100kg-91, college: Delaware State). He played last season at Fjolnir in the D1. In 8 games he recorded very impressive stats: 19.4ppg, 9.0rpg, 2.6apg, 2.0spg and 2.6bpg. Oliver helped them to make it to the semifinals. Thor AK Akureyri (Dominos League) landed 22-year old guard Hreidar Vilhjalmsson (190-95). He has played for the last four years at Fjolnir in the D1. In 28 games he averaged 5.4ppg, 1.2rpg and 1.9apg last season. Vilhjalmsson helped them to make it to the semifinals. He played in the final of Icelandic D1 Playoff in 2016. Russia - Iceland 82-69 Russia won the International tournament in Kazan undefeated. In the last game the overcame Iceland 82-69 to finish with a perfect 3-0 record. Russia insured a 24-15 lead from the start and added a 24-16 run in the second period. Iceland pulled back in the third quarter as they produced a 23-12 surge, however the hosts closed the game with a final 22-15 rally.
