Neptune 54 UCC Mardyke Blue Demons 79 - Dec 30, 2008 (by Patrick Maher)
Despite the unflattering scoreline Neptune Cork playing without 1st choice point guard Michael Mc Ginn competed effectively for 3 out of 4 quarters and at times showed the form that has seen the teams performances improve dramatically towards the latter part of the pre Christmas campaign.

Despite the unflattering scoreline Neptune Cork playing without 1st choice point guard Michael Mc Ginn competed effectively for 3 out of 4 quarters and at times showed the form that has seen the teams performances improve dramatically towards the latter part of the pre Christmas campaign.
Basket for basket exchanges typified the early part of opening quarter with Demons having a solid defence and being comfortable to play out of it and take what they can out of their quick break.Neptune Cork on the other hand were forced to rely on their passing game and depend on Ger noonan,s penetration and dish plays and the American import players to post and penetrate for lay up shots and relied on put backs to a large extent. With 4.31 remaining Demons lead 9 pts to 8.Demons succeded to push it out to 19 to 10 pts late into the quarter though were forced to keep their intensity level high as Neptune Cork consistantly threatened to close the gap again essentially through penetration and dish offence plus some lay up of it,s quick break.
The second quarter mirrored the first in terms of both teams offensive and Defensive strategies and although Demons threatened an early blowout it did not materialize.Perhaps the decisive play phase in the game occured with Neptune Cork not capitalizing on a 3 free throws opportunity to bring the game to 32 to 25 , rather Demons saw the half out ahead 34 to 24
Two minutes into the third quarter Demons extended to lead 40 to Neptune Corks 26 with Colin O Reilly having as big a role as the import players for Demons at both ends of the floor.
Shane Coughlan for Demons made an opportunist 3 to take it to 43 plays 36 at 7.30 remaining mark a lead Demons did take out to 15 points though a determined agressive Neptune Cork side brough the differential to 9 points as the 3rd quarter closed.
Having a deeper team payed dividends in the final quarter for UCC Mardyke Blue Demons as it progressed to lead 68 to 48 and it was too in this latter quarter that Mc Ginn,s
last quarter impact play was missed most by a still determined and committed Neptune Cork team. With Neptune Cork running in younger less experienced players as Demons closed out on a 79 to 54 scoreline it was an entertaining if not classic performance from both teams that will as playoff places become more relevant ensure the fans turn out as in as big numbers as at The Neptune Cork Stadium this Sunday evening.

The derby clash between UCC Demons and Neptune favored the Demons 79-54. The game was very physical and intense. Neptune defended their home court with great pride. The early game jitters resulted in a 19-10 Demons lead after the first period. Both sides settled into a nice rhythm in the second stanza with the Demons taking a 34-24 lead into halftime. Neptunes Vincent James (201-F, agency: 540 Sports, college: NC-Asheville) ( 20 points and 11 rebounds) was tough to handle with 12 first half points. UCC Demons Colin O'Reilly (197-F-84, college: Post) ( 21 points) led the Demons at the break with 14 points.
The second half saw a very spirited Neptune team with Ed Millard (198-F, agency: 22ft) (10 points 9 rebounds) cut the lead to 8 points with the ball. However, the tough defense of Jerrah Young (201-F-85, agency: Dynasty Sports, college: Toledo) ( 18 points and 14 rebounds) safely kept the Demons in control. The third period ended with the Demons leading 56-45. The fourth period saw the Demons take control behind the point guard leadership of Ryne Hamblet (196-G-85, college: Bowling Green) (14 points,7 rebounds 5 assists and 4 steals) with stellar defense and opportunistic fast breaks. The UCC Demons and Neptune game was exciting for the fans in Cork and good for basketball in Ireland. courtesy of Coach Doug Leichner

In a preview of the Cup semi-finals, UCC Demons beat the Tralee Tigers 83-69 at the Mardyke Arena. The Demons were led by Jerrah Young (201-F-85, agency: Dynasty Sports, college: Toledo) with 24 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. Jerrah was a warrior and battled against veteran Roy Smallwood (202-F-81, college: UTEP)(14 points). 'Young impressed me with his defensive effort on a very talented front court. Tralee Tigers were led by Carl Hadley (193-F, college: Sam Houston St.)'s 31 points. Carl Hadley is an explosive scorer. We tried a variety of defenders on him. As surprising as it may seem, I feel like we held Carl Hadley to 31 points. It was a great win being without our starting back court of Ryne Hamblet (196-G-85, college: Bowling Green) and Shane Coughlin (188-G-79). I like the effort the UCC Demons displayed against adversity.' -Coach Leichner'
