Aoife McDermott (185-91) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for top-ranked UL Aughinish, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 15.
The 20-year old player had a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds, while her team beat DCU Mercy (#3, 12-3) 81-68. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. It allowed UL Aughinish to consolidate first place in the Irish Superleague. They maintain perfect record without any lost game in the league. It's already very far into the season and UL Aughinish keeps perfect 15 -0 record. It's McDermott's second year at UL Aughinish and it's hard to imagine this team without her. Aoife McDermott has solid league stats. She is in league's top in points (8th best: 13.6ppg), rebounds (8th best: 8.2rpg) and averages impressive 55.6% FGP.

The second best player in last round's games was young Tessa Solan (177-F-92) of Oblate Dynamos. Solan had a very good evening with a double-double of 11 points and 21 rebounds. Bad luck as Oblate Dynamos was edged by slightly higher-ranked Singleton (#8, 3-12) 44-40. This loss caused Oblate Dynamos to slide to the very bottom (10) position in the standings. 15 lost games are too many comparing to just one victory Oblate Dynamos managed to get this year. Solan is a newcomer at Oblate Dynamos and despite he is not a team leader yet, every game he becomes more reliable player. Hopefully performances like the last one will happen more often.

Third on the list of top players last round was former international guard Niamh Dwyer (176-G-82) of league's second-best TM Hotel Cork. Dwyer scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. She was a key player of TM Hotel Cork, leading her team to a 84-55 easy win against the lower-ranked Meteors (#5, 8-7). TM Hotel Cork is closer and closer to the top of the standings. They will still need more victories. But 15-2 record is not that bad... Dwyer has a great season in Ireland. After 15 games, she made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 20.3ppg (2nd best), rebounds with 6.5rpg (6th best) and assists with 4.3apg (3rd best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Rachel Vanderwal (176-G-83) of UL Aughinish - 21 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists
5. Cathy Kavanagh (187-G-90) of Waterford W. - 21 points and 6 rebounds
6. Niamh Mullally (180-C-84) of Waterford W. - 20 points and 8 rebounds
7. Claire Rockall (178-G-90) of TM Hotel Cork - 15 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists
8. Lisa Palmer (186-G/F-86) of DCU Mercy - 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists
9. Michelle Fahy (183-C-82) of UL Aughinish - 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists
10. Mairead McNally (175-G-88) of Ulster Rockets - 21 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

History makers defeat Luxembourg at FIBA U16 Europe - 12 days ago

Ireland's U16 women made history to guarantee a highest ever finish at a FIBA European Championships with a 46-38 win over Luxembourg. A remarkable second half turn around ensured victory against a team who had won their previous encounter by 18 points. Ireland's defensive credentials were in full in display in the first half with Luxembourg pressured into mistakes and wrong options. Despite early scores by Bronagh Power Cassidy and Maeve O'Seaghdha (183-PF-00),, Ireland couldn't find the...   [read more]
