BASKETBALL IRELAND WEEKLY PREVIEW

In the Nivea Womens SuperLeague, the leaders UL travel to the capital to play Meteors with coach James Weldon hoping for another professional performance.

Meteors have had a fine season, winning eight games and we certainly wont be complacent, said Weldon, whose side are looking for their 31st consecutive win.

DCU Mercy coach Mark Ingle was upbeat despite losing to UL and his side will get a chance to bounce back when they travel to play Killester in an interesting Dublin derby.

UL are a very good side but I was relatively happy that my team showed a lot of character, Mark said.

Killester are a good side that will be looking for some revenge after the cup semi final in January.

DCU Mercy will complete their double-header weekend when they entertain Ulster Rockets who pushed Waterford Wildcats close last week.

I was very happy in the manner we battled against Waterford Wildcats and the experience of playing in this league is standing to my players as the season matures, said the Rockets coach Breda Dick.

Liffey Celtics and Oblate Dynamos will have a rare old battle at the Leixlip centre with both sides looking to build on their solitary wins this season.

Singletons Supervalu Brunell fresh from their win over Oblate Dynamos will look forward to the visit of Waterford Wildcats as coach Kieran OLeary hopes for back-to-back wins.

We under-performed against Dynamos but if we get the same looks and our shots drop who knows what may happen against Wildcats, Kieran said.

Duran Maquinaria Ensino Lugo (LF2) added to their roster 18-year old American (has also Irish passport) forward Fiona O'Dwyer (182-99, college: Emmanuel, MA). She played last season at Castellammare di Stabia in Italian Serie A2. In 24 games she recorded 13.6ppg, 11.4rpg (#2 in the league), 1.6apg and 2.3spg. A very spectacular season in her career as she was selected Eurobasket.com All-Italian A2 Import Player of the Year and voted to 2nd Team. The previous (15-16) season O'Dwyer played...   [read more]

Ireland U18 Women: European silver medalists : Ireland's unbeaten streak at the FIBA U18 Women's European Championships finally came to an end in the final this evening, as they lost out 67-43 to Germany. Promotion to Division A is still assured, as is the squad's status as Ireland's most successful ever basketball team, and they were given a standing ovation at the final buzzer by the capacity crowd who have supported them every step of the way through a superb tournament. 'It's incredi...   [read more]
