BASKETBALL IRELAND WEEKLY ROUND-UP

In the Nivea Womens SuperLeague, ULs phenomenal season is showing no signs of ending as they took a giant step closer to landing the regular season crown after an 87-31 demolition of Meteors.

The Limerick side, who already secured the National Cup earlier this month, are on the back of 31 consecutive wins and with home advantage secured in the Play-Offs, they will be favourites to take the league crown in March.

We were a little bit disappointed with our final quarter in our last game against DCU Mercy despite us winning the game, said UL Head Coach James Weldon. We wanted to make amends so we were determined to keep our focus right throughout the game. It is really encouraging that everyone got on the scoresheet and it is good preparation ahead of a tough double header next weekend.

DCU Mercy enjoyed back to back wins with their 61-36 win over Ulster Rockets on Sunday completing the double.

Shauna OConnor was to the forefront with 17 points, while Sarah Woods and Suzanne Maguire were also in good form.

On Saturday, Mercy negotiated a tricky looking Dublin derby as they beat 11890 Killester 55-33 in Clontarf.

A strong first half showing saw them lead by 15 points with Christina Newton putting in a good performance with a respectable 12 point haul.

It was pleasing to get the two wins particularly against two sides who have caused teams a lot of problems this year, said Mercy Head Coach Mark Ingle.

Singletons SuperValu Brunell earned their fourth win of the campaign with a dramatic 82-79 win in overtime over Waterford Wildcats.

The win marked Brunells second on the trot as they look to finish their debut season in the top flight on a high.

Oblate Dynamos edged out a nervy affair as they managed to see off Liffey Celtics 47-44.

The clash was tied at the break but Dynamos showed their experience to claim just their second win of the season.

Center Claire Melia (185-C-99) put on an amazing game in the last round for P.Panthers, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 7. The 17-year old player had a double-double of 21 points and 18 rebounds, while her team crushed, the league's bottom-ranked team Brunell (#9, 0-6) with 17-point margin 77-60.
