BASKETBALL IRELAND 2012 ANNUAL AWARD WINNERS

UL Eagles and UL Basketball Club are heavily featured in the 2012 Basketball Ireland Annual Awards winners list.

Both Limerick clubs have enjoyed perfect seasons with Eagles claiming the double for the first time in their history following success in the Mens National Cup and Nivea For Mens SuperLeague, while UL Basketball Club enjoyed a clean sweep of trophies in the Nivea Womens SuperLeague and National Cup.

Mark Keenan has been named Nivea For Mens SuperLeague Coach of the Year after an amazing first season in charge of the club, while Limerick native Jason Killeen is the Player of the Year.

In the womens section, UL Head Coach James Weldon has been named Nivea Womens SuperLeague Coach of the Year for the second year running after a flawless campaign, while Great Britain star and potential Olympian prospect Rachael Vanderwal has retained the Nivea Womens SuperLeague Player of the Year award. The Young Player of the Year awards went to Brunells Megan OLeary and DCU Saints Keith Anderson.

UL Eagles have earned the Club of the Year tag, while progressive Cork club Fr Matthews will collect the Irish Daily Star Special Merit Award.

In the Schools section, St Josephs The Bish Galway have been named the Boys School of the Year, while Christ the King (Cork) are the Girls School of the Year.

Maciej Nazimek has been named referee of the year following a memorable year for officials in this country. Maciej was recently awarded his FIBA Referee Licence following the FIBA Clinic for International Referee Candidate in Mannheim, Germany.

Another notable recipient is Edel Thornton, who plays for Cork side Brunell. On top of being named Female U16 Player of the Year for her exploits with her school St Vincents, Cork, she was also named Female U16 International Player of the Year and AICC Under 16 Girls Player of the Year.

Ballons dramatic season which saw them crowned the 2011-12 Division One champions sees Mindaugas Tamusauskas named Male Senior Player of the Year, while Audrius Jonusas is Mens Senior Coach of the Year. Galway club Maree enjoyed a superb season which is reflected in this years awards. Rian Maher was named AICC Under 14 Boys Player of the Year, Kenneth Hansberry is the Male Young Player of the Year, while John Finn is the Mens Underage Coach of the Year.

Super League Round 5: Killester beats Belfast Star by two after a very close game - 2 days ago
There were just five rounds played in Regular Season of Super League and we can clearly see which teams will fight for top positions and which will try to avoid bottom places. The most exciting game of round 5 in the Super League took place in Belfast. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 5th ranked Belfast Star (3-2) to eighth ranked Killester (3-2) 75-73 in the game for the fourth place. Went to cover 1st live game this season with EuroBasket where incidentally the Ladies at the club as Ladies will do were doing the so often mundane though no less important jobs impressed upon me the realization that a mention here would not go unoticed.
