The Irish Times - Saturday, June 30, 2012 Sex case jury fails to reach verdict

THE CASE against a former Christian Brother accused of sexual assault on five boys at the North Monastery secondary school in Cork has been adjourned until October after a jury failed to reach a verdict.

Edward Bryan (58), Athboy Road, Trim, Co Meath, had pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned on charges of indecently assaulting the five boys at the North Monastery school on various dates during the 1980s.

The jury of seven women and four men at Cork Circuit Criminal Court failed to reach a verdict on charges against Mr Bryan, despite deliberating for more than seven hours on Thursday and all day yesterday.

During the trial, the five complainants had each given detailed testimony about how they had been indecently assaulted by Mr Bryan, known as Br Bryan, when they found themselves alone with him when he took them for training for the school basketball team.

Mr Bryan, who the court heard left the Christian Brothers in 1994 and later became deputy director of the National Centre for Young Offenders at Oberstown in Co Dublin, said the allegations against him were fabricated by the five complainants.

They know that I did not hurt any child, least of all them, said Mr Bryan.

I worked hard for them, I worked long hard hours for them. He added that he did engage in one-to-one training sessions with boys, but at most it involved passing the basketball to the boy.

Anyone who knows me knows that it is not my character. I certainly did not do anything like that, he said in cross-examination. It is fabrication. They were well-coached, they got their stories right but they are wrong. It is absolute lies, not true.

Following the jury announcing that they were unable to reach a verdict, Judge Sen Donnabhin agreed to an application from Dermot Sheehan, prosecuting, to have the matter relisted for October to allow him to take instructions from the DPP.

Irish Super League round 1 best performance: Phillip Lawrence - 11 hours ago

American Forward Phillip Lawrence (201-F) had an amazing evening in the last round for second-ranked Moycullen, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 1. The player had a double-double of 24 points and 20 rebounds, while his team crushed KUBS (#10, 0-1) with 16-point margin 89-73. Moycullen is placed at 2nd position in Irish Super League. But it's just the very beginning of the season and Moycullen won just one (their first) game. It's too early to say anything as...   [read more]

Friday September 23rd Basketball Ireland Men's Super League UCC Demons 92, Irish TV Tralee Warriors 77 Pyrobel Killester left themselves with too much to do against an impressive looking Griffith Swords Thunder losing out 91-86 at the IWA in Clontarf. Brian O'Malley's side were 20 points in arrears at half time before storming back into the game to set up a frenetic final quarter. Thunder eventually pulled through with some late free-throws and 14 points apiece from debutants Justin Gol...   [read more]

September 23rd in Ireland still has people returning albeit to one degree or anotherin dribs and drabs from end of season holidays. What mark's it differently though this year is that the Basketball season begins some 2 weeks or so earlier than normal and this is accounted for withthe addition of two extra teams to bring the total to the highest ever at 12 teams. Ok the general standardcan be said to belacklustre at both the import and regular Irishplayer standard to that say of the early...   [read more]
