BALLON SET FOR SUPERLEAGUE

Wednesday, 18 July 2012

The 2012-13 Nivea For Mens SuperLeague season will include Ballon Basketball Club, who will play their home games at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.

Ballon, which has been in existence for the past 11 years and originally set up in the village of Ballon in Carlow, have enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of Irish basketball. The club, which catered for ladies basketball in their early years, went on to boast a very successful mens team, which featured in the National League Division One competition.

Over the past six years, Ballon has expanded way beyond the Carlow border and have made Palmerstown in Dublin their home for their senior mens side. Their side has a real international flavour and boast players from countries such as Estonia, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. Their recent success makes impressive reading. Since playing in Division One, they have claimed the league title on two occasions, while they also managed to lift the mens senior national cup.

The entry of Ballon BC into the SuperLeague on a one year licence is a very important development for the League. The club has brought great energy and commitment to the game in recent years, drawing mainly upon players from Europe who have made Ireland their home. As well as this, the club has commenced the process of building stronger Irish roots at underage level, said SLMB (SuperLeague Management Board) Chairperson Pat Duffy.

The involvement of Ballon will bring a new dimension to the League, where a trial regulation has been introduced for a one year period to facilitate the greater involvement in the League of Europeans resident in Ireland.

Meanwhile, a Ballon statement read: Ballon Basketball Club is proud to announce that they have recently been awarded the Mens SuperLeague licence for the upcoming season 2012/13 by the SLMB. We would like to thank the SLMB and Basketball Ireland for all their help during the licence application process.

For the SuperLeague team home games we have agreed a deal with the National Basketball Arena and we are really happy to play in the home of Irish Basketball.

After the decision of Belfast Star to withdraw from the League this year, the Ballon entry retains the number of licensees at eight.
