Superleague Round 3: Singleton beats Meteors by three after a very close game - Oct 23, 2012

There were just three rounds played in Regular Season of Superleague and we can clearly see which teams will fight for top positions and which will try to avoid bottom places.

The most exciting game of round 3 in the Superleague took place in Cork. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 4th placed Meteors (1-2) to sixth ranked Singleton (1-1) 58-55 in the game for the fourth place. It was a good game for Amy Waters who led her team to a victory with 9 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists. Danielle O'Leary contributed with 12 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Forward Rebecca Nagle (173-92) answered with 12 points and 4 assists for Meteors. Meteors' coach Hugh Kilbride rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Singleton left bottom position moving up to fourth place. Meteors at the other side dropped to the fifth position with two games lost. They share it with Killester and Waterford W.. Singleton's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Cork Singleton.
Superleague top team - DCU Mercy (3-0) added another victory to their record. This time they beat fifth ranked Waterford Wildcats (1-2) in Dublin 75-67. It was a great evening for the former international guard Lindsay Peat (175-80) who led her team to a victory scoring 13 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Tessa Solan helped adding 17 points and 9 rebounds. DCU Mercy's coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was the former international center Niamh Mullally (180-84) with 17 points and 9 rebounds. DCU Mercy have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 3-0 record, which they share with UL Aughinish. Waterford Wildcats at the other side keep the fifth position with two games lost. They share it with Meteors and Killester. DCU Mercy will play against TM Hotel Cork (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Waterford Wildcats will play against the league's second-placed UL Aughinish in Limerick to get more than just one victory in their record.

It was an exceptional evening for Rachel Vanderwal who led the winners and scored 28 points and 6 steals. Fionnuala Toner came up with 12 points and 5 rebounds for Ulster Rockets in the defeat. UL Aughinish have a solid series of three victories in a row. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with DCU Mercy. Loser Ulster Rockets still closes the standings with two games lost. UL Aughinish will meet at home Waterford Wildcats (#6) in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Ulster Rockets will play against 11890 Killester in Dublin and hope to get finally their first victory.

In the last game of round 3 Killester smashed Liffey Celtics on the road 60-41.


Ulster Rockets - UL Aughinish 30-77

The game in Belfast supposed to be also quite interesting. Leader UL Aughinish (3-0) played at the court of bottom-ranked Ulster Rockets (0-2). UL Aughinish smashed Ulster Rockets 77-30 on Saturday. UL Aughinish dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Ulster Rockets' 28. They outrebounded Ulster Rockets 33-16 including a 23-11 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was an exceptional evening for Canadian-British guard Rachel Vanderwal (176-83, college: Boston U.) who led the winners and scored 28 points and 6 steals. The former international guard Rachel Clancy (175-88, college: Cal Poly - SLO) accounted for 15 points and 8 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winning side. Guard Fionnuala Toner (175, college: MacMurray) came up with 12 points and 5 rebounds and Niamh Toner added 8 points and 7 rebounds respectively for Ulster Rockets in the defeat. UL Aughinish have a solid series of three victories in a row. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with DCU Mercy. It was a great evening for the former international guard Lindsay Peat (175-80) who led her team to a victory scoring 13 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Forward Tessa Solan (177-92) helped adding 17 points and 9 rebounds. Four DCU Mercy players scored in double figures. DCU Mercy's coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was the former international center Niamh Mullally (180-84) with 17 points and 9 rebounds and the former international center Christine O'Gorman (178-90) scored 16 points. DCU Mercy have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 3-0 record, which they share with UL Aughinish. Liffey Celtics - Killester 41-60

Everything could happen in Kildare at the game between two tied teams. Both eighth ranked 11890 Killester and bottom-ranked Liffey Celtics had identical 0-2 record. But Liffey Celtics were not able to use a home court advantage and were crushed by the opponent from Dublin 60-41 on Saturday night. It was an exceptional evening for guard Michelle Clarke (178-94) who led the winners and scored 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Guard Lorraine Scully (176-83) accounted for 16 points and 5 rebounds for the winning side. Aine O'Connor came up with 9 points and 8 rebounds and Ailbhe O'Connor added 9 points and 6 rebounds respectively for Liffey Celtics in the defeat. Liffey Celtics' coach tested eleven players seeing no chance for a win. 11890 Killester (1-2) left bottom position moving up to fifth place, which they share with Meteors and Waterford W. It was Liffey Celtics' third loss in a row. They still closes the standings with three games lost. 11890 Killester will meet Ulster Rockets (#8) in the next round. Liffey Celtics will have a break next round.
