The most exciting game of round 5 in the Superleague took place in Cork. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 3rd placed DCU Saints (3-2) to leader UCC Demons (5-0) 83-82 on Monday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of DCU Saints. UCC Demons looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by DCU Saints' players. Australian forward Kenton Walker II (205-F-84, college: St.Mary's, CA) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 12 rebounds for the winners and the former international guard Shane Coughlan (188-79) chipped in 18 points, 5 rebounds and 11 assists. Forward Patrick Glover (193-77) responded with 19 points and 6 rebounds. Undefeated UCC Demons have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 5-0 record. DCU Saints at the other side keep the third position with two games lost. UCC Demons are looking forward to face Killester (#6) in Dublin in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. DCU Saints will play at home against B.Gais Neptune in Cork and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game in Dublin was also worth to mention about. Third ranked UL Eagles (4-1) played at the court of 5th ranked UCD Marian (2-3). UL Eagles defeated UCD Marian 73-61. The former international center Jason Killeen (211-85, college: Augusta St.) nailed a double-double by scoring 19 points and 16 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winning side and Robert Lynch accounted for 24 points and 5 rebounds. American forward John Galvin (203-88, college: Fair Dickinson) came up with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds for UCD Marian in the defeat. UCD Marian's coach Sasa Punosevac rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. UL Eagles moved-up to second place. UCD Marian at the other side dropped to the fourth position with three games lost. They share it with B.Gais Neptune and Killester. UL Eagles will play against Ballon Inter (#7) in Dublin in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. UCD Marian will play at home against Moycullen in Galway and hopes to get back on the winning track.
4th placed Killester (2-3) was outscored at home by sixth ranked B.Gais Neptune (2-3) with the biggest margin this round 90-63 on Saturday night. The best player for the winners was Darren Townes who had a double-double by scoring 29 points and 17 rebounds. Michael Westbrooks produced 16 points and 6 rebounds for the hosts. Killester's coach Darren O'Neill gave up on the game allowing to play twelve players seeing no chance for a win. B.Gais Neptune moved-up to fourth place, which they share with UCD Marian and Killester. B.Gais Neptune will meet higher ranked DCU Saints (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Killester will play against the league's leader UCC Demons in Cork and hope to secure a win.


UCC Demons - DCU Saints 83-82

4th placed Killester (2-3) was outscored at home by sixth ranked B.Gais Neptune (2-3) with the biggest margin this round 90-63 on Saturday night. B.Gais Neptune dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Killester's 40 and made 18-of-21 free shots (85.7 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Killester 58-29 including a 44-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. B.Gais Neptune looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by Killester's players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when B.Gais Neptune made 8 blocks. The best player for the winners was American forward Darren Townes (201-86, college: Hofstra) who had a double-double by scoring 29 points and 17 rebounds. Guard Gerard Noonan (180-82) chipped in a double-double by scoring 21 points, 7 rebounds and 11 assists. The former international guard Michael Westbrooks (193-82) produced 16 points and 6 rebounds and American point guard Lawrence Summers (175-83, college: Davidson) added 14 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Killester's coach Darren O'Neill gave up on the game allowing to play twelve players seeing no chance for a win.
