Basketball Ireland Weekend Preview

With the Nivea Womens SuperLeague being decided by playoffs, this weekends final round of regular season play is all about jostling for seeding.

The top six that will advance are already set but it remains to be seen in what order. While UL Huskies and Team Montenotte Hotel have already secured the first and second seed and byes to the semi-finals, only third placed DCU Mercy out of the quarter-final bound teams are assured of their seed.

Several different scenarios could leave WIT Wildcats, Ulster Rockets or Meteors anywhere between fourth and sixth.

The task is plainest for Wildcats who will know that a win against Killester in Clontarf would assure them of fourth place. However, as head coach John Hayes knows well, earning a win versus Killester in Clontarf is never a simple affair.

We played them there last year and it was a double overtime game that left me shaking so much I could barely text the result afterwards when we eventually won it.

Its a huge game for us because we really want that home quarter final and a chance to fill the house down in Waterford. We are trying to build this club back up to where we were a few years back and a home playoff game would be a big boost for that.

Half an hour after tip-off in Clontarf, Ulster Rockets and Meteors take to the floor in Belfast knowing that a Wildcats loss would open up the chance for either to possibly take fourth.

Regardless of the Wildcats result, the Belfast clash is of major importance with Meteors needing to win by nine or more to at least overtake Rockets for fifth place and therefore avoid the mighty DCU Mercy in the quarter finals.

The different situations will be at the back of our mind no doubt about it and we will have talked about them, said Meteors head coach Hugh Kilbride.

That said we will just be focused on winning the game and if we can, trying to win it by nine points or more. We are well aware of their size and the difficulty of the task at hand to try and go to Belfast and beat that team.

For Rockets head coach Breda Dick, this weekend also offers an opportunity to finally put her best team on the floor.

It will be the first time all year that we have everybody fit, healthy and available. The Wildcats game is going on at the same time basically so we wont know that result and cant be worried about it, we just have to go out and win our game and hope.

We beat them earlier in the season but we were two different teams back then really so its kind of like preparing for a new team.

The weekends slate of games is rounded of by a potential final preview between UL Huskies and DCU Mercy in Limerick Saturday evening while Singleton SuperValu Brunell play twice in 24 hours, first away to Team Montenotte Hotel Cork before welcoming Liffey Celtics to the Parochial Hall on Sunday.
