Eoin Chubb
KUBS prevented a clean sweep of Men's Division One trophies by Maree as they claimed the League Cup with an 89-79 win at the Watershed, Kilkenny. The Dublin side had finished runners' up in their maiden Division One campaign but a solid weekend at the League Finals game them their first trophy. Maree had six players on the score sheet in the opening quarter but KUBS had their eye in from the perimeter and Conor James (191-G/F-90), Kevin Foley (193-G/F-83), Jonathan Riles and Sean Ingle all registered three-pointers to go 28-13 clear. The Galway side rallied with an 11-0 run either side of the first break. The KUBS offence had hit a glitch and it took a strong drive from Eoin Chubb (188-G-90) to get them going in again. They led 44-41 at the half with free-throws pushing them clear after Maree equalised through Eoin Rockall (182-PG-98)'s 62.5% accuracy and Kenneth Hansberry's first half double-double. Both sides led by six or more in an undulating third quarter. Cathal Finn (178-PG-90) stepped up completing his double-double as Maree enjoyed their biggest lead the of the game but KUBS were 66-61 to the good by the end of the period. Eoin Chubb was the game-changer with eight points in a row and an MVP performance that included seven assists. Conor James' sixth triple of the afternoon came just when Maree threatened to draw level for the fifth time. The shooting guard finished with a game high 28 points while Player Coach Kevin Foley helped make sure of the win in taking his tally to 21 down the stretch.

MAREE were today crowned Basketball Ireland Men's Division One Regular Season champions for the second year in a row with a win over Ulster University Elks in Oranmore. In an extremely close and competitive game, it took Maree until the fourth quarter to put some breathing space between the two sides, with momentum swinging from end to end throughout the game. Good scoring from Kenneth Hansberry and Eoin Rockall (182-PG-98) sealed the deal in the end for the Galway side, and Maree were cr...   [read more]
