Gal Mekel
The Israeli prospect Gal Mekel (193-PG-88, college: Wichita St.), has been chosen by the Basketball League Adminstration to the MVP of 2010/11 season, after averaging:
12 ppg,4.3 rpg, and 6.3 apg.

Mekel got the award after he showed a significant improve in his game, and showed great character leading his team-Gilboa/Galil to its 2nd final in a row (as last season they won the championship).
He also gain more experience by playing in the top European competitions the Eurocup, and the Euroleague (Qualifying Round).

We talked about his future and this is what he said:

Q1:
You made some great achievements as last season you won the championship, and this season you led your team to finals, you were choosen to the BSL MVP of the season, and you played in the Eurocup and in the Euroleague, what is your next goal?.

Gal:
Yes I think that my first 3 years in pro ball were beyond any dream that I had, Gilboa Galil gave me the opportunity to develop and I'm sure that after those 3 years (final4 and rookie of the year in my first season , championship in my second season and playing in euroleague , eurocup and getting the mvp of the league in my 3rd season) I'm ready for the next step...this step will be to play in a good club in one of the best leagues in europe next year and of cours to help the Israeli national team this summer in Lithuania (the European Championship).

Q2:
You have already lived by yourself while playing in college, are you ready to do this again in Europe?.

Gal:
I'm ready , those 2 years in college helped me a lot in many ways besides basketball, to grow up , to be more independent and to learn about ather culturs, I did it when I was 18 so Im sure im ready for it now when im 23 year old.

Q3:
Describe yourself as a player.

Gal:
I'm a true point guard that do anything it takes to help the team win.... I can help the team by defending by controlling the game by scoring (12 ppg) and by passing (6.3 apg)...I think I will adjust good for the needs of the team and then I find my zone.

Q4:
What do you want to improve in your game?.

Gal:
I think there is always a room to improve in any aspect of the game ,if I have to choose one, its to be more consistent in my shoot, I feel good with it but to get to the highest level I need to work on it and that is what im going to do the all summer, and I'm doing all the time.

Gal already drawn attraction from teams in Europe during the past years, and even got offers to play in good European teams this season, but he showed loyalty to his team and decided to stay, the Israeli national team camp will start soon and Gal should get a call up to the upcoming European Championship, and he already played in the European Championship in 2009 in Poland (he is also holding a Polish passport).

Gal Mekel selected the top Israeli playing abroad in last week's games - 15 hours ago
We bring you last week's top performances from Israelis who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level. This week's number one is an international point guard Gal Mekel (190-88, agency: BeoBasket). He could not help Gran Canaria (1-1) in their last game. Despite Mekel's very good performance the league leader Gran Canaria lost 94-98 on the road to the lower-ranked (#4) Tofas.    [read more]
