Jeron Roberts (194-G/F-76, college: Wyoming) former Israel NT player, recently retired after 14 years overseas and accepted a position as the Head Women's Coach of a new University, Pacifica University in Covina.
You played in many countries, which one you enjoyed most and why?
The Country I enjoyed the most was Israel. I spent the most time there, 10 of my 14yrs of playing were spent in that country and the country is like my second home. I love it there, its so easy to manage, everyone speaks english, the majority of the television is in english, the weather is amazing. Its comparable to california weather and thats where im from, the Los angeles area, Covina, where its very warm and not very cold winters, the food was great as well, its a very americanized place.
Which game from your career as a player you will never forget?
There are alot of games I will never forget but one of the big ones was playing against the Greek national team in the European Championships in 2007 in Madrid. They had all the stars of Greece and it was probably one of the biggest games I played in, they were known as a great defensive team,I played well, but we lost, but it was a great experience to play against them as well as the Spanish National team.
How hard was to decide to retire? Did you have any offers this summer to continue playing?
It was hard for me to retire. Of course you always want to continue playing as a player, but i always said that i wanted to coach and I was presented a great opportunity to build a program. Not often do you get the chance to mold a program from its beginning stages and i felt like the chance to be a Head Coach doesn't come often so I felt that it was my time to give back to the younger generation and give them the knowledge and experience I gained over 14yrs of playing.
Who is the coach you admire most?
Its hard to pick one Coach that I admire the most but to name a few I would say in not any order Arik Shivek, Zvika Sherf, Robbie Belinko..Israeli Coaches of many national teams and teams abroad. They were great coaches I had the chance to be coached by.
Tell us few words about your new job at the University? What about your future plans with your new job?
At my new University, Pacifica University, in Covina, California. I am building the best program possible. We are a new school established in 2010. We are the first ALL SPORTS University. All the degrees and programs are geared toward the sports industry. We have a Men's program in competition this year in which I will be an Assistant Coach and the Women's program where i will be the Head Coach gets underway for the 2013-2014 season. So I have one year to recruit and build the best program possible. For now we are and independent school which means we haven't settled into a division yet. We want to build and grow and become a small school off no more than 3000 students with strong academics and basketball programs. i will be heading the Women's side and I would like to also keep the European influence and connections i have and offer the chance for European players to come to college as well. i was a player and I remember hearing guys say all the time that they wish they could go to college and ask me if I could help them. Now Im in a position where I can offer that on the women's side and before they become professional they can come and experience playing at a competitive level in college and be coached to the highest level by someone who has been where they have been and where they are trying to go. I hope to bridge that gap and be a positive influence in the Coaching world and make Pacifica University Women's Basketball the best program it can be. For any good women players who haven't turned professional and do want to go to college, i want them to feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org and i will definetly see what can be done about placing the right players.
I want to thank you for this interview and the oppurtunity to share my story and my new profession. I will truly miss my playing days but I love my new calling and being a coach is something I have always wanted to do. This is the first start, I dont know where it will end but I am definetly up to and ready for the challenge!!
