Former Syracuse assistant coach Bernie Fine is no longer affiliated with IsraeliMaccabi Haifa, sources with knowledge of the breakup told Eurobasket. Fine was hired by Haifa last April as head consultant.
was also told that Fine, who worked with Syracuse University for 36
seasons and had the longest active streak of consecutive seasons at one
school among assistant coaches in Division I, was mostly responsible for
Haifa's summer training camp in Florida, where they weigh up various
potential contract players.
However, Haifa's 2012-13 roster doesn't feature a single signee from the team's tryout camp.
Haifa confirmed this report to Eurobasket, adding, "Bernie Fine's role was a consultant for the preseason. He is not currently with the club, but we are discussing future roles with the team down the road."
Oddly enough, in an interview with Maccabi's official website last April, Fine said, "I will bring a lot to the table for Haifa as I'm happy to reference and recruit many of the players I have coached and seen play over the years."
Asked whether he would be involved in the head coaching candidate search, Fine said, "..my role as a consultant is to recommend and evaluate potential coaching candidates for Haifa."
Haifa eventually went on to hire Brad Greenberg, a 58-year-old Jewish-American with NBA coaching, general management and NCAA Division I coaching experience.
The team's official press release following Fine's acquisition stated the following: "Maccabi Haifa has hired former Syracuse University associate head coach Bernie Fine as a basketball consultant. Fine, who will be based in the United States, will consult the Haifa management on player personnel decisions as well as the teams coaching search for next season."
Fine previously had strong ties to Israeli basketball as he coached the United States' Maccabiah team to a silver medal at the 1993 World Maccabiah Games in Israel.
