Casspi camp optimistic entering Cavs training camp - Sep 30, 2012

After the most productive offseason of Omri Casspi's career, those close to him believe that the Cleveland Cavaliers are in essence getting a new player when training camp starts Tuesday.

Casspi thought his trade to the Cavs in June 2011 would kickstart his career after a rough 2010-11 with the Sacramento Kings, but a knee injury he suffered on national-team duty with Israel in the summer of 2011 set the tone for a disappointing debut season in Cleveland.

This time, though, Casspi reports for Cavs camp coming off a great run with his country, helping Israel qualify for Eurobasket 2013 by averaging 19.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists.

The best part: Casspi shot an impressive 52 percent from 3-point range (26 for 48) in the tournament and finished fifth in the competition for overall makes from deep. Denver Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari (Agency: Players Group) (30.6 percent) and Brooklyn Nets newcomer Mirza Teletovic (Agency: Beo Basket) (35.6 percent) were among the more recognized outside shooters with NBA ties who finished well behind Casspi.

"Omri's arrival in Cleveland last season was far from smooth and nothing like we anticipated after being traded from Sacramento," Casspi's older brother, Eitan, told Eurobasket from his home in Yavne, Israel.

Omri's injury (in the summer of 2011) caused him not only to miss the entire Eurobasket games; he also sat out the first few practices with the Cavaliers and his injury was noticeable during the first couple of season games.

"After last season, Omri was devoted," Eitan continued. "Devoted to perk up every part of his arsenal. From his defense and ballhandling skills to his shooting abilities, Omri was on a mission to progress. Again."

Once the Cavaliers' season ended, Casspi flew out to Las Vegas to train with the team's coaching staff before returning to Israel to join the national squad. The results were evident.

"He's completely healthy and everyone got a chance to see what a fully recovered Omri plays like," Eitan said.

After Eitan Casspi roomed with his brother for his first three NBA seasons, Omri will live this season with former youth teammate Or Steiner, Casspi's close friend who studies in Cleveland.

"I'll be living in Israel this year but I'll try to join Omri for the Jewish holidays," said Eitan, who has begun coaching youth basketball in Israel and will soon start his collegiate studies.

Eitan adds: "The upcoming season will be crucial for Omri. He has everything going for him now. He's not a rookie anymore. He's a four-year veteran who's familiar with Coach (Byron) Scott's system. This should work to his advantage and help him showcase what we have seen from him this past summer."
