Israel's at war: Ballers torn between careers and safety - Nov 20, 2012

Chris Allen
Day seven of the war between Israel and Hamas continued Tuesday morning as Palestinians fired dozens of Grad rockets towards the Israeli cities of Ashdod and Be'er Sheva, four landing inside the city, sounding alert sirens throughout the South.

According to Israeli Defense Force reports, one IDF soldier was moderately wounded in the attack. During the past seven days over 1000 rockets were fired from Gaza towards Israel.

Foreign ballers' families have shown immediate concern for their overseas loved ones as Maccabi Ashdod's rookie guard Chris Allen was the first American to leave Israeli soil late last night.

The former 6-foot-3 Iowa State product played five games for Ashdod averaging 15.4 points 2.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 36 minutes of action.

Allen's rookie teammate, forward Kenny Gabriel from Auburn University, who recorded 12.2 points, 7.3 boards and 1 dimes per, is set to leave Israel later this week. In addition, rumblings around the league regarding other potential American dropouts is on the rise.

"Israel has been an all-around great experience thus far," one Israeli league newcomer told Eurobasket, but I'm under a lot of pressure from family in the U.S. to return home. I'm in a position where I'm torn between my career and my safety, " he added.

In addition to the attacks over Southern residential communities and populated areas, the battlefield seems to have reached the Tel Aviv hardwood.

Last Thursday, roughly three hours after a rocket hit Rishon LeZion and prior to Maccabi Tel Aviv's Euroleague home game against Spanish Unicaja Malaga, air raid sirens were set off in Tel Aviv for the first time since the 1991 Gulf War.

In addition, earlier this week, the Israeli League Administration postponed both Maccabi Ashdod and Elitzur Ashkelon games from Sunday to Monday, and again to Wednesday due to the difficult situations in the South. League officials readdressed the topic and decided to cancel both teams' games completely, until further notice.

"This isn't my first year in Israel so I'm more aware of the situation and how it could become uncomfortable to foreigners -- but for European rookies and guys who are playing in Israel for the first time in their careers the situation can be very intimidating, " one elite division guard told Eurobasket.

Over the weekend, approximately 700 IDF reserve troops were called for immediate duty. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to make a ceasefire mission to Israel later today and meet with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in attempts to end to war.
