National League Round 16: Hapoel Kazrin edges Elitzur Yavne by two points - Feb 7, 2013

The most exciting game of round 16 in the National League took place in Kazrin. This derby game ended with only two-point defeat on the road of higher ranked Elitzur Yavne (11-5) to eighth ranked Hapoel Kazrin (8-8) 102-100 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Elitzur Yavne. The hosts trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 28-24 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Hapoel Kazrin made 25-of-31 free shots (80.6 percent) during the game. It was a great shooting night for Hapoel Kazrin especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.9 percentage. 25 personal fouls committed by Elitzur Yavne helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American forward Gary Johnson (198-88, college: Texas) fired 31 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Naturalized Russian power forward Anton Kazarnovski (205-85) chipped in 8 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. American swingman Brian Laing (195-85, college: Seton Hall, agency: I.D.S. Law) produced 27 points and 6 assists for lost side. Hapoel Kazrin have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Ironi Ramat Gan. Elitzur Yavne at the other side keeps the fourth position with five games lost. They share it with Hapoel Afula. Hapoel Kazrin is looking forward to face Hapoel Kfar Saba (#9) at home in the next round. Elitzur Yavne will play against Elitzur Ramla (#10) and is hoping to win this game.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Nes Ziyona. First ranked Ironi Nes-Ziona faced 3rd ranked Hapoel Afula. Host Ironi Nes-Ziona (14-2) defeated guests from Afula (11-5) 96-91. Worth to mention a great performance of Tal Karpels (195-90) who helped to win the game recording 24 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Tal Michael Dunne contributed with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners. American forward Allen Durham (198-88, college: Grace Bible) replied with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 15 rebounds for Hapoel Afula. Hapoel Afula's coach Avner Yeor rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Ironi Nes-Ziona have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 14-2 record. Hapoel Afula at the other side dropped to the fourth place with five games lost. They share the position with Elitzur Yavne. Ironi Nes-Ziona will play against bottom-ranked Maccabi Kiryat Bialik (#14) on the road in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Hapoel Afula will play against Hod Hasharon (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Maccabi Kiryat Bialik will meet at home league's leader Ironi Nes-Ziona in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Ironi Kiryat Ata will play against Kiryat Tivon (#12) in Kiryat Tivon and hope to secure a win.

The winners were led by Raviv Pitshon who had that evening a double-double by scoring 19 points and 13 rebounds. Ironi Nahariya's coach Shay Minister felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ironi Nahariya have an impressive eight-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 13-3 record behind leader Ironi Nes-Ziona. Ironi Ramat Gan lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the seventh place with eight games lost. Ironi Nahariya's next round opponent will be Beer Yaakov (#11) on the road and are hoping to win another game. Ironi Ramat Gan will play against Maccabi K/G (#13) in Kiryat Gat.

Rest of the games of round 16 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Macc.B.Yaakov was defeated by Hod Hasharon in a road game 89-76. Elitzur Ramla beat Kiryat Tivon at home 73-67. Maccabi K/G lost to Hapoel K/S on the opponent's court 81-95.
