Yoav Saffar
Former Israeli national team captain Yoav Saffar (207-F-75, agency: Avi Zilberman) is trying to come out of retirement.

The 37 years old veteran small forward, who officially retired 9 years ago, is planning a comeback and since yesterday is practicing with Hapoel Holon, which is fighting against relegation to the minor league and seeking for help after that team captain, Sean Daniel, was banned by Fiba for six month for use of unauthorized substances.

With 9 games left on their schedule, Holon ranked 11th at the top Israeli league and has only 6 players on its roster that can play at this level after Daniel's ban.

Saffar is considered one of the greatest players in Israel basketball history. He grew up in Hapoel Holon Youth team and also started his proffesional career at Holon. At his prime he led Galil Elion to the playoffs finals and was playing for Israeli powerhouse, Maccabi Tel aviv, between the years 2001 and 2004.

Saffar was part of the team that won Eurolegue title at 2003-2004 but he had to retire from the game at the end of that season because He had several back injuries that hurt his game and finish his career at the age of 29.

As mentioned earlier, Saffar was a big part of Israeli National team and participated in three European champinships (1999,2001,2003).

In edittion, Holon agreed on terms with the naturalized American shooting guard, Omar Wattad. Wattad was born in Israel but moved with his family to United states when he was at a very young age.

He played with Georgetown Hoyas for 2 years and than moved to University of Tennessee Chatanooga for his last 2 years at the NCAA. Wattad started his professional career at Rustavi from the Georgian basketball league.

Great season indeed as he was voted to Israeli National League All-Star Game. But the most of that year he spent at Ironi Ashkelon (National League) where in 19 games he recorded...   [read more]
