National League Round 20: Hod Hasharon is upset by Elitzur Yavne - Mar 6, 2013

There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.

The most important game in the last round took place in Hod Hasharon between third ranked Hod Hasharon (15-5) and fifth ranked Elitzur Yavne (14-6) on Tuesday night. Hod Hasharon was defeated by Elitzur Yavne in a tough game at home 79-86. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Hod Hasharon. The guests trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 4-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 86-79. Elitzur Yavne dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Hod Hasharon's 30. Elitzur Yavne forced 19 Hod Hasharon turnovers. The best player for the winners was American swingman Brian Laing (195-85, college: Seton Hall, agency: I.D.S. Law) who scored 22 points and 5 rebounds. Swingman Elad Hofman (192-85) chipped in 20 points and 5 rebounds. Nigerian power forward Chukwudinma Odiakosa (203-85, college: Illinois St., agency: N.E.T.) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points and 14 rebounds for the hosts. Elitzur Yavne maintains fifth position with 14-6 record. Hod Hasharon at the other side keeps the third place with five games lost. Elitzur Yavne are looking forward to face league's second-placed Ironi Nahariya at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Hod Hasharon will play against Hapoel Kazrin and is hoping to win this game.
Bottom-ranked Maccabi K/G managed to get a fourth victory, breaking the ten-game losing streak. This time newly promoted Maccabi K/G outleveled thirteenth-ranked Maccabi Kiryat Bialik in Kiryat Gat 74-48. It's especially surprising that the victory came too easily and 26-point difference suggests that Maccabi K/G is in a good shape to leave the bottom place. American forward Lenny Daniel (203-87, college: CS Northridge) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 16 rebounds. Muhammad El Amin contributed with 22 points for the winners. Maccabi K/G's coach Roni Tzukerman felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Naturalized American Sean Labanowski (205-92) replied with 14 points and 6 rebounds for Maccabi Kiryat Bialik. Maccabi K/G (4-16) moved-up to twelfth place, which they share with Kiryat Tivon. Maccabi Kiryat Bialik lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the bottom position with 17 games lost. Maccabi K/G will play against Kiryat Tivon (#13) in Kiryat Tivon in the next round. Maccabi Kiryat Bialik will play at home against Ironi Ramat Gan and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Leader Ironi Nes-Ziona delivered the seventeenth victory on Tuesday night. This time they beat 7th ranked Hapoel Kazrin (10-10) 87-69 in Nes Ziyona. Worth to mention a quality performance of Tal Michael Dunne who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 20 points and 14 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Mike James responded with 31 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Ironi Nes-Ziona have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 17-3 record. Newly promoted Hapoel Kazrin dropped to the eighth place with ten games lost. Ironi Nes-Ziona will meet Elitzur Ramla (#9) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Hapoel Kazrin will play against Hod Hasharon and hope to secure a win.
The game in Ramat Gan supposed to be also worth to mention about. 4th ranked Hapoel Afula (13-7) played at the court of sixth ranked Ironi Ramat Gan (12-8). Tenth ranked Hapoel Kfar Saba (7-13) saved a 1-point victory at home edging 11th ranked Beer Yaakov (6-14) 86-85 in the fight for the tenth place. The best player for the winners was Adir Harush who had a double-double by scoring 18 points and 13 rebounds. Hapoel Kfar Saba maintains tenth position with 7-13 record. Loser Beer Yaakov keeps the eleventh place with 14 games lost. Hapoel Kfar Saba will face higher ranked Ironi Kiryat Ata (#6) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Beer Yaakov will play against Hapoel Afula (#4).

In the last two games of round 20 Kiryat Tivon was defeated by Ironi Nahariya in a road game 85-75. Ironi K-A smashed Elitzur Ramla at home 87-52.



Ironi Ramat Gan - Hapoel Afula 85-65

The game in Ramat Gan supposed to be also worth to mention about. 4th ranked Hapoel Afula (13-7) played at the court of sixth ranked Ironi Ramat Gan (12-8). Ironi Ramat Gan did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 85-65. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Hapoel Afula. It looked good early as Hapoel Afula took an 9-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Ironi Ramat Gan took control and eventually winning the game that evening by 20 points. Ironi Ramat Gan outrebounded Hapoel Afula 38-27 including 23 on the defensive glass. 26 personal fouls committed by Hapoel Afula helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The winners were led by the former international power forward Amit Tamir (208-79, college: California) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 26 points and 10 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) and American swingman Tyrone Kent (196-86, college: Toledo) supported him with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Kent is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Five Ironi Ramat Gan players scored in double figures. Even a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds by American forward Allen Durham (198-88, college: Grace Bible) did not help to save the game for Hapoel Afula. Forward Oz Blayzer (199-92) added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 6 blocks for the guests. Despite that victory Ironi Ramat Gan went down to seventh position due to points difference. Hapoel Afula at the other side keeps the fourth place with seven games lost. The most important game in the last round took place in Hod Hasharon between third ranked Hod Hasharon (15-5) and fifth ranked Elitzur Yavne (14-6) on Tuesday night. Hod Hasharon was defeated by Elitzur Yavne in a tough game at home 79-86. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Hod Hasharon. The guests trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 4-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 86-79. Elitzur Yavne dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Hod Hasharon's 30. Elitzur Yavne forced 19 Hod Hasharon turnovers. The best player for the winners was American swingman Brian Laing (195-85, college: Seton Hall, agency: I.D.S. Law) who scored 22 points and 5 rebounds. Swingman Elad Hofman (192-85) chipped in 20 points and 5 rebounds. Nigerian power forward Chukwudinma Odiakosa (203-85, college: Illinois St., agency: N.E.T.) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points and 14 rebounds and naturalized Latvian swingman Gary Gandel (203-80) added 16 points and 4 assists respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Elitzur Yavne maintains fifth position with 14-6 record. Hod Hasharon at the other side keeps the third place with five games lost. Elitzur Yavne are looking forward to face league's second-placed Ironi Nahariya at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Hod Hasharon will play against Hapoel Kazrin and is hoping to win this game.

Bottom-ranked Maccabi K/G managed to get a fourth victory, breaking the ten-game losing streak. This time newly promoted Maccabi K/G outleveled thirteenth-ranked Maccabi Kiryat Bialik in Kiryat Gat 74-48. It's especially surprising that the victory came too easily and 26-point difference suggests that Maccabi K/G is in a good shape to leave the bottom place. They dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Maccabi Kiryat Bialik's 24. Maccabi K/G forced 23 Maccabi Kiryat Bialik turnovers and outrebounded them 38-25 including 32 on the defensive glass. American forward Lenny Daniel (203-87, college: CS Northridge) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 16 rebounds. The other American import swingman Muhammad El Amin (196-87, college: Stony Brook, agency: Two Points) contributed with 22 points for the winners. Maccabi K/G's coach Roni Tzukerman felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Naturalized American Sean Labanowski (205-92) replied with 14 points and 6 rebounds and American forward Dallis Joyner (203-90, college: Stony Brook) added 9 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Maccabi Kiryat Bialik. Maccabi K/G (4-16) moved-up to twelfth place, which they share with Kiryat Tivon. Maccabi Kiryat Bialik lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the bottom position with 17 games lost. Maccabi K/G will play against Kiryat Tivon (#13) in Kiryat Tivon in the next round. Maccabi Kiryat Bialik will play at home against Ironi Ramat Gan and hopes to get back on the winning track.
