In the fifth game in group A of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, Mapooro Cantu outclassed Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul bigtime. The Italian home team ruled almost from start to finish and crushed the Turkish guests with 82-58. Beye Tabu-Eboma (184-SG-85) scored 16 points for Cantu, Marco Cusin (210-C-85, agency: Interperformances) and Jeff Brooks (203-F-89, college: Penn St.) added 15, Pietro Aradori (195-SG-88) 14. Romain Sato (194-G/F-81, college: Xavier) led Fenerbahce with 10 points.
Mike Batiste opened the score for Fenerbahce in the first period, followed by a basket by Sato to give the guests a 0-4 lead. Tabu and Markoishvili answered for Cantu, and after five minutes the scores were tied: 8-8. Tyus scored six points in a row after that and fueled a 15-4 run for Cantu in the next minutes, resulting in a double digit advantage for the home team after 10 minutes: 23-12.
Fenerbahce closed the gap to 23-16 in the second period, but Jeff Brooks (203-F-89, college: Penn St.) restored the difference and Marco Cusin (210-C-85, agency: Interperformances) made it a 14-point game after 16 minutes. Cantu held on the lead and went to the locker room with a 41-27 advantage.
Cantu continued it's dominance in the third period. Pietro Aradori (195-SG-88) made it a 20-point game after 23 minutes: 49-29. Fenerbahce made a small comeback towards the end of the period with consecutive scores by Onan and Sato but wasn't able to become a substantial threat and finished the period 57-41 behind.
Markoishvili got things going for Cantu in the fourth period, Fenerbahce scored 5 points in a row to make it 59-46 after 32 minutes, but the home team took a timeout and continued with a 8-2 run, 66-48. A threepointer by Aradori restored the 20-point lead after 38 minutes (76-56), and with the defeat inevitable, Fenerbahce surrendered. Tabu and Brooks made the final scores and had the home crowd celebrate a huge 82-58 victory.
Fenerbahce dropped to 3-2 in Group A and will travel to Russia next week to play fellow second ranked Khimki Moscow, Cantu is now fourth in the group and will play last ranked Olimpija Ljubljana on the road to keep the newborn Top 16 dreams alive.
