SerieA Round 10: Lottomatica Roma hands first loss to Cimberio Varese - Dec 3, 2012

The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with defeat of the leader, extra overtimes, favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.

The most surprising game was the first loss of undefeated Cimberio Varese (9-1) on the court of sixth ranked Lottomatica Roma on Sunday night. Visitors were defeated by Lottomatica Roma 91-87. It ended at the same time the nine-game winning streak of Cimberio Varese. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Cimberio Varese won third quarter 20-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Lottomatica Roma forced 22 Cimberio Varese turnovers. Worth to mention a great performance of American-Nigerian power forward Gani Lawal (205-88, college: Georgia Tech) who helped to win the game recording 23 points and 8 rebounds (perfect from the field making all ten shots !!!). American point guard Jordan Taylor (185-89, college: Wisconsin) contributed with 17 points and 6 assists for the winners. American point guard Mike Green (185-85, college: Butler) replied with 20 points and 6 assists for Cimberio Varese. Lottomatica Roma (6-4) moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Cantu and SAIE3 BO. Cimberio Varese at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. Lottomatica Roma is looking forward to face Air Avellino (#15) on the road in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Cimberio Varese will play against Sutor Montegranaro (#12) and is hoping to win this game.
Bottom-ranked Vanoli Cremona managed to get a third victory, breaking the four-game losing streak. This time they won against thirteenth-ranked Umana Venezia 92-88. International point guard Luca Vitali (201-86) scored 27 points and 5 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners and Lance Harris chipped in 13 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side American point guard Alvin Young (188-75, college: Niagara) responded with 23 points. Umana Venezia's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Vanoli Cremona (3-7) moved-up to eleventh place, which they share with 4 other teams including defeated Umana Venezia. Umana Venezia lost third consecutive game. Vanoli Cremona will play against higher ranked Montepaschi Siena (#3) on the road in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Umana Venezia will play against SAIE3 BO (#5) in Bologna and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Higher ranked Cantu (6-4) fell to tenth ranked Juvecaserta (5-5) in overtime by two points 74-76 on Sunday night. Jeleel Akindele notched 15 points and 8 rebounds to lead the effort. Even 14 points and 5 rebounds by Maarten Leunen did not help to save the game for Cantu. Cantu's coach Andrea Trinchieri let to play ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Juvecaserta moved-up to seventh place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Cantu keeps the fourth position with four games lost. They share it with Acea Virtus RM and SAIE3 BO. Juvecaserta will meet Enel Brindisi (#9) on the road in the next round. Cantu will play against Angelico Biella (#13) and hope to secure a win.
The game in Milano was also worth to mention about. Second ranked Banco di Sard. (8-2) played at the court of 8th ranked Armani Milano (5-5). Banco di Sard. managed to secure a 6-point victory 86-80. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Armani Milano. Travis Diener fired 17 points and 7 assists for the winners. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Banco di Sard. maintains second position with 8-2 record behind leader Cimberio VA, which they share with Montepaschi. Armani Milano at the other side dropped to the seventh place with five games lost. Banco di Sard.'s next round opponent will be Trenkwalder RE (#8) in Reggio Emilia where they are favorite. Armani Milano will play on the road against VL Pesaro.
Important game to mention about took place in Reggio Emilia. Ninth ranked Enel Brindisi (5-5) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging higher ranked Trenkwalder RE (5-5) 78-75 in the fight for the seventh place. It was a very good performance for Antywane Robinson who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 4 steals. Enel Brindisi's coach Pier Luigi Bucchi used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Enel Brindisi moved-up to seventh place, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated Trenkwalder RE. Enel Brindisi will face Juvecaserta (#10) in Caserta in the next round.

Other games in round 10 were not that significant. Sidigas AV was smashed by Montepaschi on the road 101-65. Sutor MGR won against Angelico BI on its own court 82-75. Pesaro unfortunately lost to SAIE3 BO in Bologna 58-76.
The most impressive performance of 10th round was 31 points and 7 rebounds by Trey Johnson of Angelico BI.

Montepaschi - Sidigas AV 101-65

No shocking result in a game when third ranked Montepaschi Siena (8-2) crushed at home 11th ranked Air Avellino (3-7) 101-65 on Monday. The game without a history.
