SerieA top team - Cimberio Varese (10-1) had no problems winning another game on Sunday. This time they beat twelfth ranked Sutor Montegranaro (3-8) 106-88. The game was mostly controlled by Cimberio Varese. Sutor Montegranaro managed to win fourth quarter 29-28. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Cimberio Varese made 20-of-23 free shots (87.0 percent) during the game. They also forced 21 Sutor Montegranaro turnovers and outrebounded them 38-24 including 24 on the defensive glass. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Cimberio Varese made 7 blocks. 25 personal fouls committed by Sutor Montegranaro helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a great evening for American point guard Mike Green (185-85, college: Butler) who led his team to a victory scoring 18 points and 7 assists (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!). Nigerian-American swingman Ebi Ere (195-81, college: Oklahoma) helped adding 16 points and 9 rebounds. American point guard Ronald Steele (187-86, college: Alabama, agency: SportsTalent) responded with 12 points and 7 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Cimberio Varese maintains first place with 10-1 record. Sutor Montegranaro at the other side keeps the twelfth position with eight games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. Cimberio Varese are looking forward to face Armani Milano (#8) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Sutor Montegranaro will play against Cantu (#4) and is hoping to prove to their supporters that the loss was just an accident.
Important game to mention about took place in Pesaro. Eighth ranked Armani Milano (6-5) saved a 2-point victory on the road edging 16th ranked VL Pesaro (2-9) 72-70 on Monday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. It was an exceptional evening for American-Montenegrin point guard Omar-Sharif Cook (188-82, college: St.John's, agency: Beo Basket) who led the winners and scored 12 points and 4 assists. Ioannis Bourousis accounted for 12 points. Armani Milano's coach Sergio Scariolo allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American forward Lamont Mack (201-87, college: Charlotte) came up with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists for VL Pesaro in the defeat. Armani Milano moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Enel Brindisi and SAIE3 BO. VL Pesaro lost eighth consecutive game. VL Pesaro at the other side stay at the bottom position with nine games lost. Armani Milano will play against league's leader Cimberio Varese at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. VL Pesaro will play against Vanoli Cremona (#12) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
An interesting game took place in Venezia where higher ranked SAIE3 BO (6-5) was upset on the court of twelfth ranked Umana Venezia (4-7) 65-51 on Sunday. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of SAIE3 BO. The best player for the winners was Alvin Young who scored 13 points and 6 rebounds. Angelo Gigli produced 10 points for the guests. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Umana Venezia moved-up to eleventh place. Loser SAIE3 BO keeps the sixth position with five games lost. They share it with EA7 Armani and Enel Brindisi. Umana Venezia will meet higher ranked Juvecaserta (#9) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. SAIE3 BO will play against Montepaschi Siena and will have a slim chance for a victory.
Fourth ranked Cantu (7-4) crushed at home 13th ranked Angelico Biella (3-8) by 23 points 85-62, which is the biggest margin this round. Jonathan Tabu orchestrated the victory by scoring 14 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists. Cantu's coach Andrea Trinchieri felt very confident that he used 11 players saving starting five for next games. Cantu maintains fourth place with 7-4 record, which they share with Acea Virtus RM. Angelico Biella at the other side dropped to the twelfth position with eight games lost. Cantu's next round opponent will be Sutor Montegranaro (#13) on the road and are hoping to win another game. Angelico Biella will play against Enel Brindisi.
