Despite scoring 92 points Fenerbahce Ulker still lost it's second game in a row in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16. Italian champion Montepaschi Siena beat Ulker in Istanbul with 92-98 thanks to a dominating final period. Bojan Bogdanovic (203-SG-89) scored 31 points for Fener, Bo McCalebb (178-PG-85, college: New Orleans) added 17, Emir Preldzic (205-SF-87, agency: Beo Basket) 15 and Romain Sato (194-G/F-81, college: Xavier) 11. Siena's Bobby Brown (188-PG-84, college: CS Fullerton) (188-PG-84, college: CS Fullerton) however was the man of the match, scoring a whopping 41 points and tying the Euroleague's all-time single-game scoring mark.
The first period started with a series of mutual baskets, leading to 10-10 equality with 5 minutes of playing time on the clock. Brown sank a pair of triples for Siena, but Bogdanovic answered with a threepointer of his own and Fenerbahce matched the Italian scoring spree after that. A shot from downtown by Sato levelled the scores again in the final minute of the highscoring period: 26-26.
A jumper by David Andersen put Fenerbahce in the lead in the second period. A threepointer by Bogdanovic increased the lead to 4 points after 17 minutes (40-36), but Siena answered quickly and closed the gap again. In the final minute of the period consecutive scores by Andersen, Bogdanovic and McCalebb finally made the difference and secured a 51-45 lead for Fener at halftime.
Bo McCalebb tended the lead with a layup in the first minute of the second half. Brown countered with a three-pointer and added free throws and to baskets to make it 55-54. Sato and Batiste increased the lead tot 5 points again, 59-54 after 24 minutes. A threepointer by Bogdanovic gave Fenerbahce a double digit lead in the 27th minute: 69-58. Lead by Brown and Sanikidze Siena slowly closed the gap, and the final two baskets of the period by this duo made it 73-69 after three quarters.
A basket by Ermis and slam dunk by Sato increased the gap to 77-69 in the foruth period, but Brown scored 5 in a row to make it 79-77. With 5 minutes to go, Fenerbahce still was in the lead with 85-82 with five minutes to go. Free throws by Brown tied the game a minute later, and dunks and free throws by Tomas Ress gave the visitors a 87-90 lead with 1 minute of playing time left. After a series of free throws a dunk by Bogdanovic made it 92-94, but free throws by Carraretto and a big slam dunk by Brown to tie the all-time scoring record concluded the game and left Fenerbahce with a disappointing 92-98 loss.
Fener is now 0 for 2 in the Euroleague Top 16, and will have to turn things around against the also winless Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv on january 10th.
