Fourteenth-ranked Air Avellino (4-13) gave a tough game to first ranked Cimberio Varese (15-2) on Sunday. The visitors from Varese managed to secure only one-point victory 83-82. However their fans expected much easier game. Achille Polonara stepped up and scored 20 points and 5 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. Cimberio Varese maintains first place with 15-2 record. Air Avellino lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourteenth position with 13 games lost. Cimberio Varese will face Montepaschi Siena (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Air Avellino will play against Armani Milano (#6).

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 17: Montepaschi lost to Enel Brindisi on the opponent's court 84-94. Cantu unfortunately lost to Acea Virtus RM in a home game 60-65. Umana VE managed to beat Trenkwalder RE on the road 75-69. Vanoli CR was defeated by JuveCaserta on its own court 73-74. Angelico BI was beaten by Pesaro in a road game 89-76. Banco di Sard. won against Sutor MGR at home 106-90. SAIE3 BO was outscored by EA7 Armani on the opponent's court 91-68.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 15 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists by Drake Diener of Banco di Sard..


Enel Brindisi - Montepaschi 94-84

There was an upset when 3rd placed Montepaschi Siena (12-5) was defeated on the road by eighth ranked Enel Brindisi (9-8) 94-84 on Monday. Montepaschi Siena was trailing by 3 points at halftime but managed to get 3-point lead after three quarters before a 35-22 charge of Enel Brindisi, which allowed them to win the game. They dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Montepaschi Siena's 32. Montepaschi Siena was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. American forward Antywane Robinson (203-84, college: Temple, agency: Priority Sports) stepped up and scored 23 points and 8 rebounds for the winners and his fellow American import point guard Scottie Reynolds (188-87, college: Villanova) chipped in 21 points, 8 assists and 4 steals. American point guard Bobby Brown (188-84, college: CS Fullerton) responded with 27 points and Estonian Kristjan Kangur (201-82) scored 15 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Enel Brindisi moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Umana VE. Defending champion Montepaschi Siena keeps the third position with five games lost. Enel Brindisi will face Vanoli Cremona (#12) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Montepaschi Siena will play against the league's leader Cimberio Varese (#1) and will have a slim chance for a victory.

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both fifth ranked Lottomatica Roma and 4th placed Cantu had identical 11-5 record. But Cantu was not able to use a home court advantage and lost to the opponent from Roma 65-60 on Sunday night. The guests trailed by 2 points at the halftime before their 37-30 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. International forward Luigi Datome (203-87) stepped up and scored 18 points and 5 rebounds for the winners and American-Nigerian power forward Gani Lawal (205-88, college: Georgia Tech) chipped in 14 points and 9 rebounds. Four Lottomatica Roma players scored in double figures. Belgian point guard Jonathan Tabu (190-85) responded with a double-double by scoring 12 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists and the former international Pietro Aradori (195-88) scored 12 points and 6 rebounds. Cantu's coach Andrea Trinchieri rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Lottomatica Roma (12-5) have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Montepaschi. Cantu at the other side dropped to the fifth position with six games lost. Lottomatica Roma will face Trenkwalder RE (#9) in Reggio Emilia in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Cantu will play at home against the league's second-placed Banco di Sard. (#2) in Sassari.

Polish center Szymon Szewczyk (209-82) stepped up and scored 27 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and French forward Yakhouba Diawara (201-82, college: Pepperdine) chipped in 19 points and 7 rebounds. Umana Venezia's coach Andrea Mazzon used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American guard Donnel Taylor (198-82, college: UAB) responded with 26 points and 5 steals and American-Swiss Greg Brunner (201-83, college: Iowa) scored 15 points and 8 rebounds. Umana Venezia have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain seventh place with 9-8 record, which they share with Enel Brindisi. Newly promoted Trenkwalder RE dropped to the ninth position with nine games lost. Umana Venezia will face VL Pesaro (#14) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Trenkwalder RE will play against Lottomatica Roma (#4).

The guests were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Lithuanian forward Zygimantas Jonusas (200-82) stepped up and scored 20 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and Nigerian center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, college: Chicago St.) chipped in 12 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Juvecaserta's coach Stefano Sacripanti used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Finnish Tuukka Kotti (205-81, college: Providence) responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds and Croatian forward Hrvoje Peric (203-85) scored 15 points and 6 rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Cimberio Varese especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.4 percentage.
