Zalgiris Kaunas beat Lietuvos Rytas
83-72 in the final of the LKF Cup.
Rytas scored only 2 points in the first
five minutes thanks to good Zalgiris
defense. Kaunas team took early
advantage 10:2. After the first quarter
the result was 22:14 Zalgiris led.
In the second quarter Damir Markota got
a technical foul for stopping Rytas
counterattack. Hollis Price hit a
three-pointer which made the result
28:28.
De Juan Collins (188-G-76, college:
Tuskegee) scored 6 points in a row
by the end of first half. The result was
42:36.
In the middle of the third quarter
De Juan Collins scored two threes,
which forced Rytas coach A.Trifunovic to
call a timeout. After the timeout Rytas
cut the deficit to 8, but
De Juan Collins led a 11:0 run for
Zalgiris. After the third quarter
Zalgiris was ahead by 13.
Zalgiris missed many three pointers and
Lietuvos Rytas reduced the deficit to
11. The pressure was growing, coaches
were arguing with referees. But all
became obvious when Zalgiris led by 15
and only 3 minutes was remaining. The
final score was 83:72 Zalgiris Kaunas
won.

D.Collins of Zalgiris and C.Eidson of
Rytas.

B.C. Zalgiris Kaunas 2006-07 Lithuanian League Winner Zalgiris Kaunas- Lietuvos Rytas 82:74 (21:13,
25:24, 19:14, 17:24) Zalgiris Kaunas is one win away from the League title after a home win
over Lietuvos Rytas. Zalgiris pulled out 82:74 victory to take a lead back in
the Finals. Three first quarters were enough to take a control of the game and
not to worry about the last.
De Juan Collins (188-G-76, college:
Tuskegee) led the winners with 17 points.
Tanoka Beard (205-F-71, college:
Boise St.) produced 14 points and 10 rebounds, while
Paulius Jankunas (204-F-84, agency:
Interperformances) added 12.
Andrius Slezas (200-F-75) and
Arturas Jomantas (202-G/F-85) threw in 16 points each for the visitors.
Well, the home advantage does matter and if next two games it will happen again
Zalgiris will grab the title. They can also break the rule of the home advantage
and celebrate the win in a road. In Game 5 Zalgiris made a 10-2 spurt and never
looked back. They finished the opening quarter with 21:13 to feel calm in the
court. Rytas, meanwhile kept it close and trailed by 46:36 at halftime.
Zalgiris led by as many as 16 in the third period.
Andrius Slezas sent Rytas back in the fourth quarter and a Kareem Rush
triple made it 78:74 with 24 seconds remaining. Zalgiris did not fell down and
won the game 82:74.
The series now moves back to Vilnius where it could end with a championship
celebration if Lietuvos Rytas fails to beat Zalgiris on Tuesday. Zalgiris Kaunas:
