Luxembourg’s top Men’s Basketball is divided in 3 levels : from Nationale 1 to Nationale 3.
The top 3 divisions feature 8 teams each . The season is divided in 3 parts. First all teams play each other twice (14 games = regular season).
Then, the top 4 teams reach the playoffs, where these teams play each other twice again (6 games = playoffs). The points of the regular season will be divided by 2 at the start of the playoffs. Finally, the best 2 teams after the playoffs will be in the best-of-3-finals.
The the bottom 4 teams will also play each other twice (6 games = playouts), all points of the regular season being kept. The 2 last teams go down to the 2002/2003 Nationale 2.
Nationale 2 and 3 play according to the same principles except for the playoff finals which do not take place there.
The season runs approximatively from Mid-September to the end of April.

Most of the players in Luxembourg are amateur players, the better luxembourgish players semi-professionals, whereas the foreigners are full professionals.
The clubs have a gentlemen’s agreement to field only one non-luxembourgish player in Nationale 1 and Nationale 2. Most of the clubs sign American inside players. The clubs of Nationale 3 are allowed to have 3 foreign players.
