Interview with Janis Berzins (194-F-93) 17 years old and in the starting five of BBL Elite and LBL
The youngest player of the BK Valmiera team, the 17 year old small forward Janis Berzins in this interview is talking about the win over the last season Latvian league champions Barons Riga, about his own performance and the plans for the summer.

First of all congratulations with the beautiful win over the last seasons champions Barons Riga! How do you feel?
I'm truly happy about it this was a very important win so that we get our confidence back. I feel that the team has much more to show than it can be seen in the tournament table.

Seems like this has been your first significant game in the 'big' basketball several important shots at the end of the game, accurate free throws?
Yes it has but I hope that this is not the last one (Janis reveals that he thinks that the game in U-16 European championship against Italy where in the last seconds he made the 3 point shot and pulled victory for Latvia has been his most significant game). I feel that with every game I have more confidence and my team mates are starting to trust me more and for that I'm really happy. Even happier I'm for the support that our fans show and we didn't let them down.

You played in a 'micro duel'' with one of the summer U-18 national team leaders Janis Timma...
In some episodes I had to play against Janis but most of the game I was playing against, in defense and offense, a player that I value very highly Latvian national team player Aigars Vitols. I have to say that it was not easy but I think that I somehow managed it and the experience itself is worth a lot!

How do you evaluate your performance this season?
I have always stated team performance above my individual that is why I think that the beginning of the season was not successful. But we are on the right road we won the last season Latvian champions Barons Riga today (interview was held on Saturday evening) and got our second win in a row. Comparing to the last season my role in the team has grown most of the games I play in the starting five in Latvian and Baltic league tournaments and the coach is starting to trust me more. Of course nothing happens for a reason and everything is based on the hard work that I have put myself through I started preparing for the season on the 31st May under guidance of Coach Gatis Melderis .

Next summer there will be two important championships for the Latvian national teams the U-19 World Championship that will take place in Latvia and U-18 European Championship. Will you plan to play in one of those?
It is much too soon to think about that because the season is long ahead and only with my performance in the court I can show that I have earned a chance to play in one of those tournaments. The chance to play in the national team is earned and that is an honor to represent it. My goal is to fight for a place in the U-19 national team. It would be interesting to train with coach Jansons because I've heard only the best about his work process. Of course it would be great to play against my team mate, now an Euroleague guy Davis Bertans and the all time youth league opponent, 'italian' Ojars Silins.
