LBL Round 18: Turiba defeats Jelgava in the closest game of the week - Feb 6, 2012

The most exciting game of round 18 in the LBL took place in Turiba. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 4th ranked Jelgava (9-9) to seventh ranked Turiba (7-11) 75-72 on Friday evening. The hosts trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 25-19 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Turiba forced 22 Jelgava turnovers. Center Roberts Mednis (204-89) scored 21 points to lead the charge for the winners and guard Krists Piternieks (202-87, agency: Dynamics Global Management) chipped in 13 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. Turiba's coach used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. The best for the losing side was swingman Edgars Krumins (194-86) with 30 points and 8 rebounds. Turiba have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain seventh position with 7-11 record. Jelgava at the other side keeps the fourth place with nine games lost. Turiba are looking forward to face higher ranked Liepaja (#3) at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Jelgava will play against the league's second-placed Ventspils where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.
LBL top team - Valmiera (12-7) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed ninth ranked U18 (0-9) in Riga 82-51. Power forward Jekabs Rozitis (206-86) notched a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the effort and Ingus Bankevics supported him with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Even 12 points by guard Edgars Stelmahers (185-94) did not help to save the game for U18. U18's coach gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Valmiera maintains first position with 12-7 record. Newly promoted U18 still closes the standings with nine games lost. Valmiera will play against Latvijas Universitate (#6) in Riga in the next round where they are favorite. U18 will play at home against the league's second-placed Ventspils and hopes to get finally their first victory.
The game in Jurmala was also quite interesting. 7th ranked Turiba (7-11) played at the court of eighth ranked Jurmala (5-13). Jurmala managed to secure a 9-point victory 91-82 on Monday. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Turiba. The best player for the winners was Atis Ozols who scored 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Roberts Mednis who recorded 20 points and 8 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Newly promoted Jurmala maintains eighth position with 5-13 record. Loser Turiba keeps the seventh place with 11 games lost. Jurmala will meet at home bottom-ranked U18 (#9) in the next round. Turiba will play against Liepaja and hope to secure a win.



U18 - Valmiera 51-82

LBL top team - Valmiera (12-7) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed ninth ranked U18 (0-9) in Riga 82-51. The game was mostly controlled by Valmiera. U18 was better in fourth quarter 18-13. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to U18's 20 and made 16-of-21 charity shots (76.2 percent) during the game. Valmiera forced 19 U18 turnovers and outrebounded them 47-34 including 32 on the defensive glass. Power forward Jekabs Rozitis (206-86) notched a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the effort and the former international swingman Ingus Bankevics (195-85, agency: Players Group) supported him with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Five Valmiera players scored in double figures. Even 12 points by guard Edgars Stelmahers (185-94) did not help to save the game for U18. Guard Toms Leimanis (183-94) added 7 points. U18's coach gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Valmiera maintains first position with 12-7 record. Jurmala - Turiba 91-82

The game in Jurmala was also quite interesting. 7th ranked Turiba (7-11) played at the court of eighth ranked Jurmala (5-13). Jurmala managed to secure a 9-point victory 91-82 on Monday. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Turiba. Turiba trailed by 16 points after 3 quarters before a 26-19 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 82-91 at the end of the game. Jurmala made 24-of-30 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was forward Atis Ozols (198-81) who scored 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Guard Davis Coders (182-92) chipped in 17 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was center Roberts Mednis (204-89) who recorded 20 points and 8 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) and guard Janis Antrops (193-91, agency: Interperformances) added 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists respectively.
