Latvian LBL round 7 best performance: Maris Ziedins - Nov 5, 2012

Maris
Ziedins
Power forward Maris Ziedins (203-F/C-90) put on an amazing game in the last round for second-ranked Valmiera, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 7.
The 22-year old player had a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, while his team beat Barons kvartals (#9, 1-4) 73-67. Valmiera is placed at 2nd position in Latvian LBL. They are still close to the very top. Valmiera would have been even better if they kept winning the games like in the last round. They have a solid 4-1 record. Ziedins has many years of experience at Valmiera, through which he has constantly improved. Maris Ziedins averages this season 12.6ppg and 5.2rpg.

The second best player in last round's games was young Juris Kalnins (200-F/C-93) of Turiba. Kalnins had a very good evening with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Of course Turiba cruised to a 92-82 relatively comfortable win over the higher-ranked LU (#3, 4-3). Turiba's 10th position in the standings has not changed. 4 lost games are too many comparing to just one victory Turiba managed to get this year. Kalnins is well-known at Turiba and is a proven leader in his second season with the team.

Third on the list of top players last round was guard Kristaps Dargais (198-G-90) of LU (#3). Dargais scored 17 points and grabbed fourteen rebounds (!!!). Despite Dargais' great performance LU lost 82-92 to the lower-ranked Turiba (#10, 1-4). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The last thing LU needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 4 victories and 3 lost games. Dargais has a great season in Latvia. After only 7 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 8.4rpg (2nd best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Artjoms Butjankovs (205-F/C-91) of Valmiera - 16 points, 14 rebounds and 2 assists
5. Ken Brown (185-G-89) of Jurmala - 19 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists
6. Antanas Kavaliauskas (207-C-84) of VEF Riga - 15 points and 4 rebounds
7. Roberts Mednis (204-C-89) of Jurmala - 12 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists
8. Lauris Mizis (198-F-89) of Jelgava - 7 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists
9. Karlis Apsitis (200-F-92) of Turiba - 16 points and 2 rebounds
10. Aaron Brackett (204-C-90) of Jelgava - 9 points and 11 rebounds

The Player of the week is choosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3*(REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4*(2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3*(2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3*(3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
