Kaspars Cipruss selected the top Latvian playing abroad in last week's games - Nov 8, 2012

We bring you last week's top performances from Latvians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Kaspars Cipruss

   #1. This week's number one is former international center Kaspars Cipruss (210-82, currently plays in Lithuania). He led Lietkabelis to a victory over the league outsider Naglis Palangos (0-6) 82-68 in the Lithuanian LKL in Tuesday night's game. Cipruss was MVP of the game. He scored 20 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 31 minutes on the court. Panevezys Lietkabelis (2-2) is placed sixth in the LKL. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Cipruss' first year with the team. Cipruss is currently seventh on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (second place). He has very reliable stats this year: 13.3ppg, 9.0rpg, 2.0apg, 2FGP: 68.8%(22-32) in the four games he played so far. Cipruss played for the Latvian senior national team four years ago.

Janis Blums

   #2. Second place goes to an international shooting guard Janis Blums (191-82, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Lithuania. He could not help Lietuvos rytas (1-4) in their last game on Friday. Despite Blums' good performance the fifth-placed Lietuvos rytas was defeated 84-78 on the road by the higher-ranked Brose Baskets (#4) in the group D of Euroleague. He recorded 12 points. It's Blums' first season with the team. This year Blums averages: 6.0ppg, 2.2rpg, 2.0apg, 2FGP: 23.1%, 3FGP: 29.2% and FT: 75.0%. He is in the roster of the Latvian senior national team.

Davis Bertans

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was an international small forward Davis Bertans (203-92, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Serbia. Bertans was not able to help Partizan (0-4) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Partizan (#6) was edged 85-82 in Barcelona by the leading Regal FC in the group D of Euroleague. Bertans was the top scorer with 17 points in 24 minutes. So far Partizan lost all four games in the Regular Season. This year Bertans' overall stats are: 7.8ppg, 1.8rpg, 2FGP: 28.6%, 3FGP: 52.9%(9-17) in the four games. He is also a member of the Latvian senior national team.

   #4. Power forward Rolands Freimanis (210-88, currently plays in Italy) was the main contributor in a Sutor Montegranaro's victory against the closely-ranked Umana Venezia (2-4) 89-83 in the Italian SerieA in Sunday night's game. Freimanis was the best player in that game. He scored 21 points. Sutor Montegranaro (2-4) is placed 13th in the SerieA. They ended the series of four consecutive loses. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Freimanis has relatively good stats this year: 11.3ppg and 3.3rpg. He is also Latvian national team player.

   #5. International swingman Mareks Jurevicus (197-85, currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian Lega2 (second division) was not able to secure a victory for Prima Veroli (2-3) in their last game. Despite Jurevicus' very good performance Prima Veroli was edged 82-80 at home by the much higher-ranked (#4) C.de Latte BRE. He was the second best scorer with 20 points. Jurevicus also added 7 rebounds in 34 minutes. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. This year Jurevicus has relatively solid stats: 13.4ppg, 4.8rpg, 2.0apg and 1.4spg in the five games. He used to play for the Latvian national team last year.

   #6. An experienced swingman Juris Umbrasko (197-79, currently plays in Estonia) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Tln Kalev (1-4) crushing them 78-49 in the Estonian KML on Wednesday night. Umbrasko scored 15 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. BC Rakvere Tarvas (4-1) is placed second in the KML. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Umbrasko belongs to league's top scorers and is ranked #3. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Umbrasko averages: 16.2ppg, 6.4rpg and 1.2apg. He is a former international player as he played for the Latvian senior team four years ago.

Maris Laksa

   #7. Former international forward Maris Laksa (205-81, college: Providence, currently plays in Baltic League) is a teammate of previously mentioned Juris Umbrasko. But that was another game of his team in Baltic League which we would like to mention. Laksa was the major contributor in a BC Rakvere's victory against the fifth-ranked Nevezis (2-3) 85-69. He recorded 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 29 minutes. BC Rakvere Tarvas (2-3) is placed third in group C. Laksa has reliable stats this year: 11.0ppg and 4.8rpg in the five games. He used to play for the Latvian national team nine years ago.

   #8. Guard Kristaps Valters (190-81, currently plays in Eurocup), who plays in Germany couldn't help Artland Dragons (0-1) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Valters' good performance Artland Dragons was defeated 82-72 in Riga by the leading VEF Riga. He recorded 12 points and added 4 assists. It was his first game for Artland Dragons this season. Valters used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2009.

   #9. International small forward Rihards Kuksiks (197-88, college: Arizona St., currently plays in Spain) contributed to an overtime Lagun Aro GBC's victory against one of league's weakest teams Assignia Manresa (0-6) 89-88 in the Spanish ACB on Sunday night. He was the top player that evening. Kuksiks scored 18 points in 33 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. Lagun Aro Gipuzkoa BC (1-5) is placed 16th in the ACB. It was his team's first victory after five consecutive loses. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Kuksiks' stats this year are: 12.8ppg, 2.0rpg and 1.5spg in the four games. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #10. Point guard Janis Strelnieks (191-89, currently plays in Eurocup) managed to help Spartak St.Petersburg to win against the closely-ranked Cibona (0-1) 64-56 in the Eurocup in Wednesday night's game. Strelnieks recorded only 4 points. It was his first game for Spartak St.Petersburg this season. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. His team is placed second in the Eurocup. Strelnieks is an international player who is currently on the senior Latvian National Team roster.

   #11. Former U18 international guard Edgars Cunda (195-84, agency: Court Side, currently plays in Estonia), who plays in the Estonian KML couldn't help Valga (3-4) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Valga was edged in an overtime 69-66 on their home court in Valga by the lower-ranked (#6) Rapla. Cunda had a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 6 assists and 3 steals in 42 minutes. Cunda is ranked seventh on the list of the best rebounders in the league and also on the list of best passers (second place). This year he has very good stats: 13.4ppg, 7.7rpg, 4.9apg and 1.7spg in the seven games. Cunda used to play for the Latvian U18 national team ten years ago.

   #12. International point guard Kaspars Vecvagars (193-93, currently plays in Lithuania) is a teammate of previously mentioned Kaspars Cipruss and both played together in the last Lithuanian LKL game. Vecvagars contributed to Lietkabelis' victory against the league outsider Naglis Palangos 82-68. He scored 9 points. Vecvagars' total stats this season are: 6.0ppg and 1.3rpg. He is also in the roster of the Latvian national team.

   #13. Former international center Raitis Grafs (208-81, college: Valparaiso, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Edgars Cunda. However that was another game of his team in Estonian KML which brought him to that list. Grafs, who plays in the Estonian KML couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Valga (3-4) in their last game. Despite his good performance Valga lost 69-75 in Tallinn to the higher-ranked (#3) Kalev/Cramo. Grafs was the second best scorer with 14 points. He also added 9 boards, passed 3 assists and added 3 steals in 34 minutes. Grafs averaged so far 11.5ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.3apg and 1.3spg in the six games. He used to play for the Latvian national team two years ago.

   #14. International point guard Edgars Jeromanovs (186-86, currently plays in EuroChallenge) couldn't help Norrkoping Dolphins in their game against Ventspils in the EuroChallenge. Despite his good performance last Tuesday Jeromanovs recorded 10 points, 7 assists and 3 steals. It was his first game for Norrkoping Dolphins this season. Jeromanovs belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #7. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #15. Former U20 international forward Agnis Cavars (196-86, currently plays in Sweden) couldn't help Sodertalje Kings in their game against Sundsvall Dragons in the Swedish Basketligan. He scored 7 points in 16 minutes. His team lost 58-62. This year Cavars' total stats are: 3.4ppg and 1.7rpg in the seven games. Worth to mention Cavars played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. He used to play for the Latvian U20 national team six years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Martins Berkis (198-F-85, currently plays in Hungary), who plays in the Hungarian A Division could not help Marso NYKK (2-4) in their last game. Despite Berkis' good performance Marso NYKK lost 84-90 on the road to the second-ranked Soproni. He scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 39 minutes. Berkis has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 18.3ppg, 3.8rpg, 1.7apg and 1.3spg in the six games he played so far.

   #2. Rihards Sulcs (190-F-87, currently plays in United Kingdom) led Bradford Dragons to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked London Leopards (1-1) crushing them 94-72 in the British EBL D1 (second division) in Sunday night's game. Sulcs scored 17 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 30 minutes. Bradford Dragons (2-0) is placed first in the EBL D1. Sulcs has very impressive stats this year: 15.5ppg, 5.0rpg, 2.5apg and 2.0spg in the two games.

   #3. Martins Provizors (202-C-87, currently plays in Ireland), who plays in the Irish Superleague was not able to help one of league's weakest teams DCU Saints (3-3) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his good performance DCU Saints was defeated 67-60 at home by the higher-ranked B.Gais Neptune (#3). Provizors recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting 18 rebounds. He also added 4 blocks. Provizors is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his sixth year in DCU Saints' roster. Provizors is ranked fifth on the list of the best rebounders in the league. He has averaged so far 9.5ppg, 9.8rpg, 1.5apg and 1.3bpg.

   #4. Edmunds Tukiss (200-SF-89, currently plays in Germany) managed to help Dragons Rhoendorf to win against the tenth-ranked Dresden (2-4) 87-83 in the German ProB (third division) in Thursday night's game. Tukiss scored only 2 points. Dragons Rhoendorf (6-0) is placed first in Group South. So far his team won all six games in the Regular Season. Tukiss has averaged so far 9.5ppg and 2.3rpg.

   #5. Gary Gandel (203-G/F-80, currently plays in Israel) was not able to secure a victory for Maccabi K/G (0-2) in their game against Ironi Ramat Gan (3-1) in the Israeli National League (second division). He recorded 6 points in 23 minutes. The league leader Maccabi K/G was badly defeated 93-74 on their home court in Kiryat Gat by the second-ranked Ironi Ramat Gan. Gandel averaged so far 11.5ppg, 6.5rpg and 2.0apg in the four games. He has a dual citizenship: Latvian and Israeli.

Liepaja/Triobet - Valmiera 85-80 Liepaja/Triobet beat Valmiera to even the series at 1-1. Valmiera trailed by 11 points after 3 quarters before a 22-16 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 80-85 at the end of the game. The best player for the winners was American guard Malcolm Griffin (193-91, college: Fresno Pacific, agency: Higher Vision Sports) who scored 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. SC Memele celebrate LBL3 title in Latvia. They won the Final series against Ezerzeme/ Rezekne 2-0 with a 92-77 win last night. SC Memele dominated the first period and led 16-5 at the end of it. Moreover they exploded with a final push in the third period to seal the victory. Valmiera - Liepaja/Triobet 101-70 Valmiera cruised past Liepaja/Triobet in the quarterfinal series opener. The game without a history.
