The most exciting game of round 8 in the LBL took place in Liepaja. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 6th ranked Liepaja (3-3) to seventh ranked Jelgava (3-3) 81-78 in the game for the fifth place. The guests trailed by 13 points after three quarters before their 27-11 charge, which allowed them to win the game. The best player for the winners was forward Lauris Mizis (198-89) who scored 17 points and 9 rebounds. Forward Arturs Duselis (201-89) chipped in 15 points. Lithuanian point guard Ernestas Ezerskis (187-87) produced 14 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for the hosts. Liepaja's coach Guntis Endzels rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Jelgava moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Liepaja and Jurmala. Jelgava is looking forward to face Turiba (#10) on the road in the next round where they are favorite. Liepaja will play against Ventspils (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game in Jurmala was also worth to mention about. Third ranked Latvijas Universitate (5-3) played at the court of 5th ranked Jurmala (3-3). Latvijas Universitate managed to secure a 8-point victory 84-76. Guard Zanis Peiners (204-90, agency: Interperformances) orchestrated the victory by scoring 24 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Kristaps Dargais contributed with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Latvijas Universitate's coach Arturs Visockis-Rubenis allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American guard Ken Brown (185-89, college: Philander Smith) replied with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for Jurmala. Latvijas Universitate maintains third position with 5-3 record having just -3 point less than leader VEF Riga. Newly promoted Jurmala keeps the fifth place with three games lost. They share the position with Jelgava and Liepaja. Latvijas Universitate will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Jurmala will play at home against Barons kvartals (#8) in Riga and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Barons kvartals managed to escape with a 2-point win 89-87 on Thursday evening. Worth to mention a great performance of Maris Gulbis who helped to win the game recording 32 points and 8 rebounds. Mikus Sokolovs responded with 22 points. Barons kvartals moved-up to eighth place. Turiba at the other side keeps the tenth position with five games lost. Barons kvartals will meet higher ranked Jurmala (#6) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Turiba will play against Jelgava (#5).

Barons kvartals - Turiba 89-87

A very close game took place in Riga between Barons kvartals and Turiba. Ninth ranked Barons kvartals (2-4) got a very close home victory over 10th ranked Turiba (1-5). Barons kvartals managed to escape with a 2-point win 89-87 on Thursday evening. Turiba was trailing by 5 points at halftime but managed to get 3-point lead after three quarters before a 20-15 charge of Barons kvartals, which allowed them to win the game. They made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Worth to mention a great performance of Portuguese forward Maris Gulbis (202-85, agency: Players Group) who helped to win the game recording 32 points and 8 rebounds and swingman Salvis Metra (195-84) who added 11 points during the contest. Guard Mikus Sokolovs (195-89) responded with 22 points and guard Martins Steinbergs (191-90, agency: FCM) scored 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Five Turiba players scored in double figures. Barons kvartals moved-up to eighth place. Turiba at the other side keeps the tenth position with five games lost. Barons kvartals will meet higher ranked Jurmala (#6) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Turiba will play against Jelgava (#5).

The winners were led by guard Janis Kaufmanis (186-89) who scored that evening 21 points and 5 rebounds and forward Janis Berzins (202-93, agency: Players Group) supported him with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Five Valmiera players scored in double figures. Even 8 points and 9 rebounds by Polish center Michal Hlebowicki (204-76) did not help to save the game for Jekabpils. American center Todd O'Brien (213-89, college: UAB) added 10 points and 6 rebounds for the guests.
