LBL Round 11: Latvijas Universitate loses #1 position - Nov 22, 2012

Round 11 in LBL means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Valmiera where host Valmiera (6-2) beat league's leader Latvijas Universitate (6-4) 74-57 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Latvijas Universitate. The game without a history. Valmiera led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 23-of-28 free shots (82.1 percent) during the game, while Latvijas Universitate only scored seven points from the stripe. The best player for the winners was power forward Artjoms Butjankovs (205-91, agency: FCM) who scored 17 points and 7 rebounds. Forward Janis Berzins (202-93, agency: Players Group) chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds. Guard Kristaps Dargais (198-90) produced 16 points and 9 rebounds for the guests. Latvijas Universitate's coach rotated eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Valmiera keeps a position of league leader. Latvijas Universitate at the other side dropped to the second place with four games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Valmiera. Latvijas Universitate will play next round against Turiba trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Valmiera will try to continue on its current victory against seventh ranked Barons kvartals in Riga.
The game with biggest result difference took place in Jelgava. Local Jelgava (4-4) outscored 11th ranked U18 (1-6) 105-75. Guard Sandis Silavs (195-88) orchestrated the victory by scoring 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Arturs Duselis contributed with 22 points (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners. Guard Davis Geks (190-95) answered with 15 points for U18. U18's coach Nikolajs Mazurs gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Jelgava maintains sixth place with 4-4 record. Newly promoted U18 stay at the bottom position with six games lost. Jelgava will play against Jekabpils (#9) in the next round. U18 will have a break next round.

In the last game of round 11 Barons kvartals defeated Liepaja in Riga 73-63.


Jelgava - U18 105-75

The game with biggest result difference took place in Jelgava. Local Jelgava (4-4) outscored 11th ranked U18 (1-6) 105-75. The game without a history. Jelgava led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They shot 60.3 percent from the field. Jelgava outrebounded U18 39-25 including a 31-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three nailing 13 long-distance shots on high 54.2 percentage. Jelgava players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Guard Sandis Silavs (195-88) orchestrated the victory by scoring 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Forward Arturs Duselis (201-89) contributed with 22 points (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners. Five Jelgava players scored in double figures. Guard Davis Geks (190-95) answered with 15 points and center Andzejs Pasecniks (211-95) added 15 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) in the effort for U18. U18's coach Nikolajs Mazurs gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Jelgava maintains sixth place with 4-4 record. Liepaja - Barons kvartals 63-73

There was a minor upset when 7th ranked Liepaja (3-5) was defeated at home by tenth ranked Barons kvartals (3-5) 73-63. It looked good early as Liepaja took an 1-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Barons kvartals had a 21-13 second period charge getting the lead and Liepaja was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 63-73. Barons kvartals made 19-of-23 charity shots (82.6 percent) during the game. Barons kvartals outrebounded Liepaja 42-31 including 31 on the defensive glass. Portuguese forward Maris Gulbis (202-85, agency: Players Group) orchestrated the victory by scoring 24 points and 6 rebounds. The former international point guard Ilmars Bergmanis (184-81) contributed with 13 points for the winners. Barons kvartals' coach Martins Gulbis allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American guard Greg Plater (185-89, college: Long Beach St.) answered with 16 points and 5 rebounds and guard Artis Ate (191-89) added 9 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Liepaja. Barons kvartals moved-up to seventh place, which they share with defeated Liepaja. Liepaja lost fourth consecutive game. Barons kvartals will play against league's leader Valmiera at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Liepaja will play against Jurmala (#4) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

AE Doxa Lefkadas (A2) agreed terms with 27-year old Latvian center Davis Rozitis (215-109kg-90, college: Hawaii). He played last season at Barons Riga in Latvian LBL league. In 25 games he had 10.0ppg, 7.8rpg, 1.5apg, 1.0spg and 1.2bpg. Rozitis helped them to make it to the semifinals. BK Ogre (LBL) confirmed in their roster 25-year old point guard Marcis Vitols (183-88kg-92). He has played there for the last two seasons. In 30 LBL games he had 9.8ppg, 2.7rpg, 4.9apg and 1.0spg last season. Vitols also played 11 games in Baltic League where he recorded 10.5ppg, 2.6rpg, 3.3apg and 1.1spg. Dragons Rhoendorf (ProB) added to their roster 25-year old Latvian center Ronalds Elksnis (203-92, college: John Brown). He played last season at BK Jelgava/BJSS in Latvian LBL2. In 34 games he recorded 11.7ppg, 6.4rpg, 2.3apg and 1.0spg. Elksnis helped them to win the LBL D2 title.
