We bring you last week's top performances from Latvians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is former international forward Maris Laksa (205-81, college: Providence, currently plays in Estonia). He led BC Rakvere to a victory over the closely-ranked Kalev/Cramo (6-5) crushing them 95-69 in the Estonian KML in Thursday night's game. Laksa was MVP of the game. He recorded 30 points (!!!) and grabbed 5 rebounds in 33 minutes on the court. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. BC Rakvere Tarvas (8-4) is placed second in the KML. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Laksa is ranked first on the list of the top scorers in the league with 17.8ppg. He also averaged so far 3.2rpg, 1.6apg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 53.8%, 3FGP: 42.3% and FT: 72.7% in the nine games he played so far. Laksa played for the Latvian senior national team nine years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international swingman Juris Umbrasko (197-79, currently plays in Estonia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Maris Laksa. But that was another game of his team in Estonian KML which we would like to mention. Umbrasko was the major contributor in a BC Rakvere's victory against the seventh-ranked KK Parnu (2-5) crushing them 93-67. He recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 12 rebounds. Umbrasko also added 6 assists. BC Rakvere Tarvas (8-4) is placed second in the KML. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Umbrasko is currently ninth on the list of top scorers. He has very reliable stats this season: 13.3ppg, 6.6rpg, 2.3apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 38.5%, 3FGP: 41.3% and FT: 92.3%. Umbrasko played for the Latvian national team in 2008.

   #3. The Latvian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Ernests Kalve (200-87, currently plays in EuroChallenge). He contributed to Szolnok's victory against the closely-ranked Timisoara (1-2) 93-80 in the EuroChallenge on Tuesday night. Kalve scored 19 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 28 minutes. Szolnoki Olajbanyasz (2-1) is placed second in group F. There are only three games left until the end of the EuroChallenge Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Kalve has relatively good stats this year: 13.7ppg, 5.7rpg, 2FGP: 57.9%(11-19), 3FGP: 22.2% and FT: 76.5% in the three games. He played for the Latvian national team two years ago.

Point guard Janis Strelnieks (191-89, currently plays in Eurocup) contributed to a Spartak St.Petersburg's victory against the closely-ranked Cholet (1-2) 69-60 in the Eurocup in Wednesday night's game. Strelnieks scored 8 points. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Spartak St.Petersburg (3-0) is placed first in the Eurocup. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. There are only three games left until the end of the Eurocup Regular Season. So now every game will be important. This season Strelnieks averages: 5.3ppg and 3.3apg. He is also Latvian national team player.

International small forward Davis Bertans (203-92, currently plays in Adriatic League) helped his Serbian team Partizan win their game against the eighth-ranked Un.Olimpija (4-5) 86-82 in the Adriatic League last Monday. Bertans scored 8 points and had 3 steals in 25 minutes. BC Partizan MT:S Beograd (7-2) is placed second in the Adriatic League. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. This year Bertans' overall stats are: 7.9ppg and 2.4rpg in the nine games. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

Point guard Edgars Jeromanovs (186-86, currently plays in EuroChallenge) helped his Swedish team Norrkoping Dolphins win their game against the fourth-ranked Tampereen Pyrinto (0-3) 84-73 in the EuroChallenge on Wednesday night. Jeromanovs scored 13 points and added 5 assists. Norrkoping Dolphins (2-1) is placed second in group C. There are only three games left until the end of the EuroChallenge Regular Season. So now every game will be extremely important. This season Jeromanovs has relatively solid stats: 11.0ppg, 2.7rpg, 4.7apg and 2.0spg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Latvian National Team roster.

   #7. International swingman Mareks Jurevicus (197-85, currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian Lega2 (second division) could not help Prima Veroli (2-5) in their last game. Despite Jurevicus' very good performance Prima Veroli was edged 74-73 at home by the much higher-ranked (#4) Novipiu Casale. He was the top scorer with 25 points (made all of his six free throws) in 32 minutes. It was Prima Veroli's third consecutive loss in a row. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Jurevicus has reliable stats this year: 14.6ppg, 4.1rpg, 1.9apg and 2.0spg in the seven games. He used to play for the Latvian national team last year.

   #8. Center Andris Biedrins (213-86, currently plays in NBA) was not able to help the Golden State Warriors (7-5) in their game against the Oklahoma City Thunder (9-3) in the NBA. Biedrins scored only 4 points. The Golden State Warriors were defeated 119-109 on the road by the Thunder. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. It's Biedrins' ninth year with the team. His total stats this season are: 0.7ppg and 2.8rpg. Biedrins used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2009.

   #9. Former international center Raitis Grafs (208-81, college: Valparaiso, currently plays in Baltic League) was the main contributor in Valga's victory against the closely-ranked Liepaja (2-5) 60-57 in the Baltic League on Friday night. He was the best player in that game. Grafs scored 20 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 29 minutes. Valga/Maks&Moorits (1-5) is placed sixth in group B. They ended the series of five consecutive loses. There are only four games left until the end of the Baltic League Regular Season. Grafs' stats this year are: 15.0ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.3apg in the three games. He used to play for the Latvian national team two years ago.

Point guard Kaspars Vecvagars (193-93, currently plays in Baltic League) helped his Lithuanian team Lietkabelis win their game against the closely-ranked Juventus (3-3) 74-67 in the Baltic League in Friday night's game. Vecvagars scored 9 points, had 5 boards, passed 5 assists and added 3 steals. Panevezys Lietkabelis (5-1) is placed second in group B. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Baltic League Regular Season. Vecvagars' total stats this season are: 6.3ppg, 2.8rpg, 2.2apg and 1.2spg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Latvian National Team roster.

   #11. International shooting guard Janis Blums (191-82, currently plays in VTB United League) managed to help Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius in a victory against the tenth-ranked PGE Turow 78-71 in the VTB United League last Monday. Blums scored only 3 points in 12 minutes. This year Blums' total stats are: 9.5ppg, 2.3rpg and 2.0apg in the four games. He plays currently for the Latvian national team.

   #12. Former international forward Ivars Timermanis (203-82, currently plays in Romania) helped Ploiesti win their game against one of league's weakest teams CS Dinamo Bucuresti crushing them 86-47 in the Romanian Division A in Friday night's game. He scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 21 minutes. Timermanis has averaged so far 8.3ppg and 2.4rpg in the eight games. He used to play for the Latvian national team back in 2007.

   #13. Former international center Kaspars Cipruss (210-82, currently plays in Baltic League) is a teammate of previously mentioned Kaspars Vecvagars and both played together in the last Baltic League game. Cipruss helped his Lithuanian team Lietkabelis win their game against the closely-ranked Juventus 74-67. He scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Cipruss belongs to league's best rebounders and is ranked #3. This season he has very good stats: 10.5ppg, 8.5rpg and 1.5apg. Cipruss used to play for the Latvian national team four years ago.

   #14. Former U18 international guard Edgars Cunda (195-84, currently plays in Baltic League) is a teammate of previously mentioned Raitis Grafs and both played together in the last Baltic League game. Cunda helped his Estonian team Valga win their game against the closely-ranked Liepaja 60-57. He scored 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 23 minutes. Cunda is currently fourth on the league's list of best passers with 4.6apg. This year he also averages: 9.6ppg, 3.8rpg and 2.0spg in the five games. Cunda used to play for the Latvian U18 national team back in 2002.

   #15. Former U20 international forward Agnis Cavars (196-86, currently plays in EuroChallenge) was not able to secure a victory for Sodertalje Kings in their game against Ventspils in the EuroChallenge. Cavars scored only 4 points. His team was edged 82-80. He has averaged so far 3.0ppg, 3.0rpg and 1.3spg. Worth to mention he played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. Cavars used to play for the Latvian U20 national team six years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Latvian passport but never been selected to any of Latvian national teams:

   #1. Edmunds Tukiss (200-SF-89, currently plays in Germany) was the major contributor in a Dragons Rhoendorf's victory against the second-ranked Hanau (5-3) crushing them 83-51 in the German ProB (third division) on Saturday night. Tukiss scored 15 points. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in Group South. Dragons Rhoendorf (8-0) is placed first. So far his team won all eight games in the Regular Season. Tukiss has averaged so far 10.0ppg and 2.3rpg.

   #2. Martins Berkis (198-F-85, currently plays in Hungary), who plays in the Hungarian A Division could not help Marso NYKK (3-5) in their last game. Despite his good performance Marso NYKK lost 72-83 on the road to the leading Atomeromu. Berkis scored 12 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 40 minutes. It's Berkis' first season with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Berkis averages: 18.1ppg, 4.9rpg, 2.1apg and 1.4spg in the eight games he played so far.

   #3. Martins Abele (216-C-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to Duquesne's surprising victory against the Youngstown State University 84-74 in the NCAA in Wednesday night's game. He recorded 9 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. The University of Duquesne has conference record this season. This year Abele has very high stats. He averages: 18.1ppg, 4.9rpg, 2.1apg and 1.4spg.

   #4. Matiss Sakne (191-G-91, currently plays in Denmark) contributed to an overtime Horsens IC's victory against the closely-ranked Horsholm (4-5) 81-74 in the Danish Ligaen in Thursday night's game. He scored 8 points in 19 minutes. Horsens IC (9-4) is placed third in the Ligaen. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Sakne has averaged so far 4.8ppg, 1.3rpg and 1.3apg in the 12 games.

   #5. Ugis Promolds (190-G-88, currently plays in Denmark) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Aalborg (1-11) crushing them 95-67 in the Danish Ligaen last Sunday. He scored 7 points in only 6 minutes. SISU Copenhagen (9-0) is placed first in the Ligaen. So far his team won all nine games in the Regular Season. This year Promolds averages only 2.1ppg in the seven games.

   #6. Martins Provizors (202-C-87, currently plays in Ireland) was not able to help DCU Saints in their game against UL Eagles in the Irish Superleague. He scored 9 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in 24 minutes. His team was badly defeated by 16 points 72-56. Provizors is currently fourth on the list of best rebounders with 10.6rpg. This year he also averages: 9.4ppg, 1.4apg and 1.2bpg in the five games.

Roberts Stumbris joins Nevezis - 6 hours ago
Nevezis Kedainiai (LKL) added to their roster 24-year old Latvian small forward Roberts Stumbris (199-98kg-93). He played last season at BK Jekabpils in Latvian LBL league. In 32 games he had 14.1ppg, 5.8rpg and 1.5apg. A very spectacular season in his career as he was named to Eurobasket.com All-Latvian League Honorable Mention and to the All-Star Game. Stumbris also played 12 games in Baltic League where he recorded 12.9ppg, 6.4rpg, 1.2apg and 1.0spg. Nevezis Kedainiai roster for 2017-...   [read more]

Damier Pitts (ex Valmiera) signs at Kataja Basket - 7 hours ago
Defending champion Joensuun Kataja Basket (Korisliiga) landed 28-year old American point guard Damier Pitts (177-80kg-89, college: Marshall, agency: Inception Sports). He played most recently at Valmiera/ORDO in Latvian LBL league. In 38 games he averaged 14.9ppg, 2.8rpg, 5.7apg and 1.5spg last season. Pitts helped them to make it to the semifinals. Latvia - Romania 98:68 Latvia crushed visiting Romania in the friendly encounter at Arena Riga. Davis Bertans (208-F-92) and Janis Timma (201-F-92) notched 14 points each for the winners. Latvia dominated from start to finish in this one. They claimed a 26:12 run ten minutes into the game. Latvia extended the lead in the second period. They accumulated a 56:31 halftime advantage.
