LBL Round 13: Valmiera defeats Jelgava in the closest game of the week - Dec 2, 2012

The most exciting game of round 13 in the LBL took place in Jelgava. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 7th ranked Jelgava (4-6) to first ranked Valmiera (8-3) 75-73 on Sunday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Valmiera dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Jelgava's 32. Forward Janis Berzins (202-93, agency: Players Group) stepped up and scored 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and the former international forward Janis Porzingis (201-82, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 17 points and 5 rebounds. At the losing side forward Lauris Mizis (198-89) responded with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds. Valmiera maintains first place with 8-3 record. Jelgava at the other side keeps the seventh position with six games lost. They share it with Barons kvartals. Valmiera are looking forward to face league's second-placed Latvijas Universitate in Riga in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Jelgava will play at home against Barons kvartals (#7) in Riga and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game between Top Four teams took place in Valmiera. First ranked host Valmiera (8-3) defeated 3rd placed Jurmala (7-5) 78-63. Center Viktors Iljins (212-91) nailed a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds for the winning side and Maris Ziedins accounted for 17 points and 10 rebounds. Center Roberts Mednis (204-89) came up with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds for Jurmala in the defeat. Valmiera maintains first place with 8-3 record. Newly promoted Jurmala keeps the third position with five games lost. Valmiera will play against league's second-placed Latvijas Universitate in Riga in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Jurmala will have a break next round.
A very close game took place in Turiba between Jurmala and Turiba. Third ranked Jurmala (7-5) got a very close victory on the road over 10th ranked Turiba (3-8). Jurmala managed to escape with a 3-point win 71-68 on Saturday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Janis Dilevka fired 16 points and 9 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws) for the winners. Karlis Apsitis produced 12 points and 5 rebounds for lost side. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Newly promoted Jurmala maintains third place with 7-5 record behind leader Valmiera. Turiba lost third consecutive game. They keep the tenth position with eight games lost. Jurmala will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Turiba will play against Liepaja (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
11th ranked U18 (1-7) was outscored at home by sixth ranked Jekabpils (6-6) with the biggest margin this round 93-46. Worth to mention a great performance of Oskars Virsis who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 8 rebounds. U18's coach Nikolajs Mazurs gave up on the game allowing to play twelve players seeing no chance for a win. Jekabpils have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to fourth place. U18 lost third consecutive game. U18 at the other side, also newcomer in the league, stay at the bottom position with seven games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

In the last game of round 13 Barons kvartals lost to Jekabpils on the opponent's court 85-92.

A very close game took place in Turiba between Jurmala and Turiba. Third ranked Jurmala (7-5) got a very close victory on the road over 10th ranked Turiba (3-8). Jurmala managed to escape with a 3-point win 71-68 on Saturday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. The guests trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 7-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 71-68. Jurmala forced 21 Turiba turnovers. Forward Janis Dilevka (200-88) fired 16 points and 9 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws) for the winners. Forward Atis Ozols (199-81) chipped in 21 points. Forward Karlis Apsitis (200-92) produced 12 points and 5 rebounds and forward Martins Motivans (200-88) added 11 points respectively for lost side. Four Turiba players scored in double figures. 11th ranked U18 (1-7) was outscored at home by sixth ranked Jekabpils (6-6) with the biggest margin this round 93-46. The game without a history. Jekabpils led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding U18 to just 5 points in fourth quarter and to 13 points in second half. Jekabpils dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to U18's 28. Jekabpils forced 23 U18 turnovers and outrebounded them 45-24 including a 18-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. 24 personal fouls committed by U18 helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of guard Oskars Virsis (192-89) who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 8 rebounds. American center Todd O'Brien (213-89, college: UAB) contributed with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Five Jekabpils players scored in double figures. Center Andzejs Pasecniks (211-95) answered with 10 points and center Klavs Cavars (200-96) added 10 points in the effort for U18. Jekabpils - Barons kvartals 92-85

There was a minor upset when 6th ranked Barons kvartals (4-6) were defeated on the road by sixth ranked Jekabpils (6-6) 92-85. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 26-18. But Barons kvartals won second period 24-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Jekabpils players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. It was a very good performance for American forward P.J. Hill jr. (182-87, college: Ohio St.) who helped to win the game recording 21 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists. The former international point guard Rinalds Sirsnins (186-85) contributed with 15 points and 6 assists for the winners. Hill jr. is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Jekabpils players scored in double figures. Portuguese forward Maris Gulbis (202-85, agency: Players Group) answered with 29 points and 7 rebounds and swingman Salvis Metra (195-84) added 18 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists in the effort for Barons kvartals. Jekabpils have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to fourth place. Barons kvartals at the other side dropped to the seventh position with six games lost.
