The biggest surprise of round 14 in LBL was guest Barons kvartals' (5-6) easy road victory over 7th ranked Jelgava (4-7) 83-66 on Thursday evening. The game without a history. Barons kvartals led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Jelgava's 30. Barons kvartals forced 19 Jelgava turnovers and outrebounded them 52-37 including 18 on the offensive glass. 25 personal fouls committed by Jelgava helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was Portuguese forward Maris Gulbis (202-85, agency: Players Group) who scored 21 points and 8 rebounds. Spanish forward Aigars Skele (192-92) chipped in 17 points and 6 rebounds (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!). Forward Andris Justovics (200-89) produced 22 points for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Barons kvartals moved-up to seventh place. Jelgava lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the ninth position with seven games lost. Barons kvartals are looking forward to face Turiba (#10) on the road in the next round. Jelgava will play against Jekabpils and is hoping to win this game.

Guests from Valmiera (9-3) defeated host Latvijas Universitate (7-5) 75-66. Power forward Artjoms Butjankovs (205-91, agency: FCM) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 17 rebounds. Janis Berzins contributed with 14 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Guard Kristaps Dargais (198-90) replied with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds for Latvijas Universitate. Latvijas Universitate's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Valmiera have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 9-3 record. Latvijas Universitate at the other side keeps the second place with five games lost. They share the position with Jurmala. Valmiera will play against Jurmala (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Latvijas Universitate will play against Jekabpils and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last game of round 14 Turiba was defeated by Liepaja in a road game 88-73.

Liepaja - Turiba 88-73

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 10th ranked Turiba's (3-9) road loss to ninth ranked Liepaja (4-6) 73-88. The game was mostly controlled by Liepaja. Turiba was better in fourth quarter 24-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Liepaja dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Turiba's 30. Liepaja forced 19 Turiba turnovers and outrebounded them 42-27 including 27 on the defensive glass. Point guard Ingus Jakovics (185-93) orchestrated the victory by scoring 19 points. Guard Kristaps Miglinieks (197-90) contributed with 16 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Power forward Juris Kalnins (200-93) replied with a double-double by scoring 10 points and 10 rebounds and forward Matiss Rudmiezis (190-91) added 14 points and 4 steals in the effort for Turiba. Five Liepaja and four Turiba players scored in double figures. Liepaja moved-up to eighth place. Turiba lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the tenth position with nine games lost. Liepaja will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Turiba will play at home against Barons kvartals (#7) in Riga and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Latvijas Universitate was plagued by 28 personal fouls down the stretch. Power forward Artjoms Butjankovs (205-91, agency: FCM) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 17 rebounds. Center Roberts Mednis (205-C-89) had an amazing evening in the last round for Gulbenes Buki (they play in Places 1-1), receiving a Eurobasket.com LBL2 Player of the Week award for round 6 (Second Stage). The 27-year old player was the main contributor (30 points, eight rebounds and four assists) to as his team Gulbenes Buki maintains the 10th position in Latvian LBL2. Too late to salvage the team, which is currently ranked such low. They already lost 9 games and recorded just one victory....   [read more]

LBL2 Round 6 (Second Stage): RSU is defeated by Marupe in a derby game - 3 days ago
The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Riga: Marupe (#5) and RSU (#5). RSU was defeated at home 54-69 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The game was mostly controlled by Marupe. RSU managed to win second period 18-10. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Aleksejevs' double-double lands him Player of the Week award - 3 days ago
31-year old center Jurijs Aleksejevs (202-C-85) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for Jekabpils and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 18. He had a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, while his team crushed BK Ogre (#8, 6-10) with 18-point margin 87-69. Jekabpils maintains the 4th position in Latvian league.
