LBL Round 15: Latvijas Universitate loses to Jekabpils - Dec 13, 2012

The game between second ranked Latvijas Universitate (7-7) and sixth ranked Jekabpils (7-7) was the most important one in the last round on Wednesday night. Latvijas Universitate was defeated by Jekabpils in Riga 75-88. It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Jekabpils's pressure prevailed and they won that period 27-21 extending their advantage to 13 points. They dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Latvijas Universitate's 28 and made 25-of-27 free shots (92.6 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Latvijas Universitate 43-25 including a 29-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a good game for American center Todd O'Brien (213-C-89, college: UAB) who led his team to a victory with 23 points and 8 rebounds (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!). The former international point guard Rinalds Sirsnins (186-85) contributed with 13 points and 8 assists for the winners. Forward Harijs Rubenis (202-91) answered with 18 points and 7 rebounds for Latvijas Universitate. Latvijas Universitate's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Jekabpils moved-up to third place, which they share with LU. Latvijas Universitate lost third consecutive game. Jekabpils is looking forward to face Turiba (#10) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Latvijas Universitate will play against the league's leader Valmiera (#1) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Folarin Campbell helped adding 15 points and 5 rebounds. The best for the losing side was guard Zanis Peiners (204-90, agency: Interperformances) with 30 points and 4 steals (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ventspils have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain fifth place with 6-1 record. Latvijas Universitate lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the third position with seven games lost. They share it with Jekabpils. Ventspils will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Latvijas Universitate will play on the road against the league's leader Valmiera and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
An interesting game for Valmiera (10-3) which played road game in Jurmala against 3rd placed Jurmala (7-6). First ranked Valmiera managed to get a 6-point victory 82-76. It was an exceptional evening for Viktors Iljins who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds. Roberts Mednis came up with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds for Jurmala in the defeat. Valmiera have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain first place with 10-3 record. Newly promoted Jurmala dropped to the second position with six games lost. Valmiera will meet at home Latvijas Universitate (#4) in the next round. Jurmala will have a break next round.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Jekabpils (7-7) and Jelgava (5-7), which took place in Jelgava. 6th ranked Jekabpils lost to ninth ranked Jelgava in a road game 86-93. The best player for the winners was Andris Justovics who scored 22 points. Jelgava's coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Jelgava moved-up to eighth place. Newly promoted Jekabpils dropped to the third position with seven games lost. Jelgava will have a break next round. Jekabpils will play on the road against Turiba.

In the last game of round 15 Barons kvartals beat Turiba on the road 97-86.

Very important is a home loss of second ranked Latvijas Universitate (7-7) against fifth ranked Ventspils (6-1) on Sunday night. Host Latvijas Universitate was defeated by Ventspils in Riga 88-70. It looked good early as Latvijas Universitate took an 6-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Ventspils had a 26-15 second period charge getting the lead and Latvijas Universitate was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 70-88. Ventspils dominated on the defensive end, holding Latvijas Universitate to just 6 points in third quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Latvijas Universitate's 20. Latvijas Universitate was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a great evening for international forward Janis Timma (201-92, agency: FCM) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). Jelgava - Jekabpils 93-86

Turiba - Barons kvartals 86-97

No shocking result in a game when seventh ranked Barons kvartals (6-6) beat on the road 10th ranked Turiba (3-10) 97-86. The game was mostly controlled by Barons kvartals. Turiba was better in third quarter 22-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Barons kvartals won last quarter 30-20. They also forced 19 Turiba turnovers. 27 personal fouls committed by Turiba helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was American forward Tyler Cain (203-88, college: S.Dakota) who scored 23 points and 9 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field). The former international point guard Ilmars Bergmanis (184-81) chipped in 13 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Karlis Apsitis (200-92) who recorded 21 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) and center Guntis Sipolins (206-93) added 14 points and 5 rebounds respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Barons kvartals moved-up to sixth place. Turiba lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the tenth position with ten games lost. An interesting game for Valmiera (10-3) which played road game in Jurmala against 3rd placed Jurmala (7-6). First ranked Valmiera managed to get a 6-point victory 82-76. Jurmala was trailing by 3 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 21-14 charge of Valmiera, which allowed them to win the game. They made 19-of-25 free shots (76.0 percent) during the game. It was an exceptional evening for center Viktors Iljins (212-91) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds. Power forward Maris Ziedins (203-90) accounted for 12 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side. Center Roberts Mednis (204-89) came up with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds and American guard Ken Brown (185-89, college: Philander Smith) added 16 points and 4 steals respectively for Jurmala in the defeat. Valka/Valga (LBL) kept in their roster 27-year old Estonian forward Robert Peterson (193-88kg-90). It is actually his comeback to Valga as he has played here before. Peterson played last season also at BC Valga-Valka/Maks&Moorits in Estonian Alexela KML. In 25 games he recorded just 2.1ppg and 1.6rpg.
