LBL Round 16: No surprise as #1 Valmiera defeats Liepaja - Dec 17, 2012

LBL top team - Valmiera (11-3) added another victory to their record on Sunday. This time they beat ninth ranked Liepaja (5-7) 78-71. Liepaja trailed by 11 points after 3 quarters before a 25-21 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 71-78 at the end of the game. Valmiera made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. Valmiera outrebounded Liepaja 46-25 including a 32-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. Worth to mention a quality performance of power forward Artjoms Butjankovs (205-91, agency: FCM) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 16 points and 13 rebounds and power forward Maris Ziedins (203-90) who added 18 points and 10 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side point guard Ingus Jakovics (185-93) responded with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Liepaja's coach Guntis Endzels rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Valmiera have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 11-3 record. Liepaja at the other side dropped to the eighth place with seven games lost. They share the position with Jelgava. Valmiera are looking forward to face league's second-placed Jekabpils on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Liepaja will play against VEF Riga (#7) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
10th ranked Turiba (3-11) was defeated at home by third ranked Jekabpils (8-7) with the biggest margin this round 90-79. The winners were led by American center Todd O'Brien (213-89, college: UAB) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 27 points, 16 rebounds and 5 assists and Jurijs Aleksejevs supported him with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Even 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists by forward Martins Vinauds (194-91) did not help to save the game for Turiba. Jekabpils moved-up to second place. Turiba lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the tenth position with 11 games lost. Jekabpils will play against league's leader Valmiera at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Turiba will have a break next round.

In the last game of round 16 Liepaja won against U18 on the opponent's court 63-54.


U18 - Liepaja 54-63

Rather expected game in Riga where 11th ranked U18 (1-8) was defeated by ninth ranked Liepaja (5-7) 63-54. U18 was ahead by 1 point at the halftime before a 21-7 third quarter run of Liepaja. They dominated on the defensive end, holding U18 to just 7 points in third quarter. They outrebounded U18 49-26 including a 19-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. The winners were led by point guard Ingus Jakovics (185-93) who scored that evening 20 points and 5 rebounds and Arnolds Helmanis (200-92) supported him with 9 points and 10 rebounds. Even 17 points and 6 rebounds by forward Armands Ginters (190-95) did not help to save the game for U18. Center Andzejs Pasecniks (211-95) added 17 points for lost side. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Liepaja moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Jelgava. U18 lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom position with eight games lost. Liepaja will play against higher ranked VEF Riga (#7) at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. U18 will have a break next round.

Defending champion VEF Riga (LBL) landed 24-year old Mexican point guard Alexander Perez Kaufmann (191-93, agency: Pro Sports). He played most recently at San Lorenzo in Argentinian LigaA. VEF Riga (LBL) agreed terms with 25-year old American guard Antwan Scott (188-81kg-92, college: Colorado State, agency: Elevate Agency). He played last season at Aris in Greek A1 league. Scott managed to play in three leagues in two countries last year. In 7 A1 games he had 4.0ppg, 2.6rpg and 1.6apg. He helped them to make it to the semifinals.
