Top ranked Valmiera (11-4) recorded its fourth loss on the court of second ranked Jekabpils on Wednesday night. Visitors were defeated by Jekabpils 83-70. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Valmiera. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. The game without a history. Jekabpils led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 21-of-26 free shots (80.8 percent) during the game. Jekabpils outrebounded Valmiera 40-28 including 29 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was the former international point guard Rinalds Sirsnins (186-85) who had a double-double by scoring 20 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. American point guard P.J. Hill jr. (182-87, college: Ohio St.) chipped in 18 points and 7 rebounds (was perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line !!!). Forward Janis Berzins (202-93, agency: Players Group) produced 17 points for the guests. Jekabpils have a solid series of three victories in a row. Newly promoted Jekabpils maintains second place with 9-7 record having just one points less than leader Valmiera. Valmiera at the other side still keeps top position with four games lost. Jekabpils will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Valmiera will play at home against VEF Riga and is hoping to win this game.
Important game to mention about took place in Jelgava. Eighth ranked Jelgava (6-7) saved a 2-point victory at home edging 4th placed Latvijas Universitate (7-8) 89-87 on Wednesday evening. Forward Lauris Mizis (198-89) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 14 rebounds. Sandis Silavs contributed with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Guard Zanis Peiners (204-90, agency: Interperformances) answered with 33 points (!!!) for Latvijas Universitate. Latvijas Universitate's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Jelgava maintains eighth place with 6-7 record. Latvijas Universitate lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the fifth position with eight games lost. Jelgava will play against Turiba (#10) at home in the next round. Latvijas Universitate's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Riga to the arena Barons kvartals.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Jurmala (7-7) against fifth ranked Ventspils (7-1) on Wednesday night. Visiting Jurmala was crushed by Ventspils in Ventspils 91-71. Janis Timma stepped up and scored 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Atis Ozols responded with 19 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ventspils have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to third place. Loser Jurmala dropped to the fourth position with seven games lost. Ventspils will meet at home bottom-ranked U18 (#11) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Jurmala will play against Liepaja (#9) and hope to secure a win.

VEF Riga's next round opponent will be league's leader Valmiera on the road and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Liepaja will play against Jurmala (#4).



Liepaja - VEF Riga 69-100

The game with biggest result difference took place in Liepaja. Local Liepaja (5-8) was outscored by seventh ranked VEF Riga (6-1) 100-69. Liepaja was ahead by 9 points at the halftime before a 65-25 second half run of VEF Riga. They made 27-of-35 charity shots (77.1 percent) during the game, while Liepaja only scored ten points from the stripe. VEF Riga forced 21 Liepaja turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Liepaja's players. 29 personal fouls committed by Liepaja helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American-Bulgarian guard Earl Rowland (188-83, college: St.Mary's, CA) nailed a double-double by scoring 17 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists for the winning side and the former international forward Kristaps Janicenoks (196-83) accounted for 16 points. Five VEF Riga players scored in double figures. American guard Greg Plater (185-89, college: Long Beach St.) came up with 21 points and 6 rebounds and Nigerian forward George Akpele (208-88, college: Grambling St., agency: Gamble Sports Management) added 7 points and 8 rebounds respectively for Liepaja in the defeat. Very important is a road loss of third ranked Jurmala (7-7) against fifth ranked Ventspils (7-1) on Wednesday night. Visiting Jurmala was crushed by Ventspils in Ventspils 91-71. The game was mostly controlled by Ventspils. Jurmala managed to win third quarter 22-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Ventspils shot 60.7 percent from the field. It was a great shooting night for Ventspils especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.4 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. International forward Janis Timma (201-92, agency: FCM) stepped up and scored 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners and the former international power forward Ronalds Zakis (207-87) chipped in 10 points and 8 rebounds. Five Ventspils players scored in double figures. Forward Atis Ozols (199-81) responded with 19 points and forward Roberts Stumbris (198-93) scored 17 points. Center Roberts Mednis (205-C-89) had an amazing evening in the last round for Gulbenes Buki (they play in Places 1-1), receiving a Eurobasket.com LBL2 Player of the Week award for round 6 (Second Stage). The 27-year old player was the main contributor (30 points, eight rebounds and four assists) to as his team Gulbenes Buki maintains the 10th position in Latvian LBL2. The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Riga: Marupe (#5) and RSU (#5). RSU was defeated at home 54-69 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The game was mostly controlled by Marupe. RSU managed to win second period 18-10. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening.
