LBL Round 19: Barons kvartals are defeated by VEF Riga in a derby game - Dec 29, 2012

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Riga: VEF Riga (#4) and Barons kvartals (#6). Barons kvartals were defeated at home 72-84 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Barons kvartals. The game was mostly controlled by VEF Riga. Barons kvartals managed to win fourth quarter 17-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. 27 personal fouls committed by Barons kvartals helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a great evening for American-Bulgarian guard Earl Rowland (188-83, college: St.Mary's, CA) who led his team to a victory scoring 10 points and 9 assists. Lithuanian center Antanas Kavaliauskas (207-84, college: Texas A&M, agency: Interperformances) helped adding 13 points and 7 rebounds. At the losing side American forward Tyler Cain (203-88, college: S.Dakota) responded with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds. Barons kvartals' coach Martins Gulbis rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. VEF Riga have a solid series of four victories in a row. Defending champion (9-1) moved-up to third place. Barons kvartals at the other side dropped to the seventh position with seven games lost. VEF Riga will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Barons kvartals will play at home against Jelgava (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Second ranked Jekabpils (10-7) crushed at home 9th ranked Liepaja (5-10) by 39 points 106-67, which is the biggest margin this round. It was a quality performance for American center Todd O'Brien (213-89, college: UAB) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 12 rebounds. Jurijs Aleksejevs accounted for 23 points and 9 rebounds. Arturs Bricis (196-92) came up with 13 points and 5 assists for Liepaja in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Jekabpils have a solid series of four victories in a row. Newly promoted Jekabpils maintains second place with 10-7 record behind leader Valmiera. Liepaja lost third consecutive game. They keep the ninth position with ten games lost. Jekabpils will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Liepaja will play on the road against Latvijas Universitate (#8) in Riga and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 19 Jelgava won against Jurmala on the opponent's court 90-83. VEF Riga outscored Turiba in a home game 90-62.



Jurmala - Jelgava 83-90

There was a minor upset when 5th ranked Jurmala (8-8) was defeated at home by seventh ranked Jelgava (8-7) 90-83. The guests were already 11 points ahead at halftime and as many as 13 after three quarters before a 27-21 last quarter charge of Jurmala cut the lead to 90-83 at the end of the game. Jelgava players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. It was an exceptional evening for American guard Shedrick Haynes (182-88, college: Tarleton St.) who led the winners and scored 18 points. Forward Lauris Mizis (198-89) accounted for 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side. Five Jelgava players scored in double figures. American guard Ken Brown (185-89, college: Philander Smith) came up with 23 points and 4 assists and center Roberts Mednis (204-89) added 9 points and 10 rebounds respectively for Jurmala in the defeat. Jurmala's coach Jevgenijs Kosuskins tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Jelgava have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to fifth place. Jurmala at the other side dropped to the sixth position with eight games lost. Jelgava will play against Barons kvartals (#7) in Riga in the next round. Jurmala will play on the road against Barons kvartals in Riga and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Very predictable result when fourth ranked VEF Riga (9-1) smashed at home 10th ranked Turiba (3-13) 90-62. The game without a history. VEF Riga led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Turiba's 20 and made 19-of-24 charity shots (79.2 percent) during the game. VEF Riga forced 19 Turiba turnovers and outrebounded them 36-25 including 24 on the defensive glass. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. It was an exceptional evening for American forward Will Daniels (203-86, college: Rhode Island) who led the winners and scored 21 points. International center Lauris Blaus (204-90, agency: FCM) accounted for 11 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side. Five VEF Riga players scored in double figures. Forward Martins Vinauds (194-91) came up with 18 points and forward Matiss Rudmiezis (190-91) added 12 points and 5 rebounds respectively for Turiba in the defeat. Turiba's coach Arnis Vecvagars gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. VEF Riga have a solid series of four victories in a row. Defending champion moved-up to third place. Turiba lost eighth consecutive game. They keep the tenth position with 13 games lost. VEF Riga (LBL) added to their roster 22-year old international center Ilja Gromovs (209-105kg-94). He played last season at Jurmalas Sports / Fenikss in the LBL. In 21 games he recorded 9.6ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.0bpg. A very spectacular season in his career as he was voted to Eurobasket.com All-Latvian League Honorable Mention. BK Barons Kvartals Riga (LBL) inked 22-year old American guard Charles Mann (196-98kg-94). He just graduated from Georgia (NCAA). Mann has played there for the last four years. Defending champion Stelmet Zielona Gora (TBL) landed 31-year old Latvian forward Akselis Vairogs (195-85, agency: Players Group). He played most recently at Valmiera/ORDO in Latvian LBL league. Vairogs managed to play in three leagues in two countries last year (!!!). In 22 LBL games he averaged 4.6ppg, 2.0rpg and 1.0apg. He helped them to win the league title.
